Mount Kailash: The Sacred Peak of Tibet
Introduction to Mount Kailash
Mount Kailash, the main peak of the Gangdise Mountains, is located in Baga Township, northern Pulan County, Ngari Prefecture, Tibet, at an elevation of approximately 6,656 meters. Revered as a holy mountain across the globe, it is recognized by many Buddhists as the center of the world. Legend holds that circumambulating the mountain can cleanse a lifetime of sins, drawing countless pilgrims annually. Straddling the borders of China, India, and Nepal, it is often called the “Crown of Ngari.” Its four symmetrical walls resemble a pyramid or, as locals describe it, a “stone mill handle.” From the south, its iconic feature—a vertical ice groove intersecting horizontal rock layers—forms a Buddhist swastika, symbolizing eternal Dharma, auspiciousness, and protection.
Spiritual and Natural Significance
Surrounded by over 250 glaciers, Mount Kailash is the source of major rivers like the Ganges, Indus, and Yarlung Zangbo, earning deep reverence from devotees. Beyond its majestic appearance, the primary purpose of visiting is the sacred pilgrimage known as “kora” (circumambulation). Pilgrims and travelers typically stay in Tarchen, a small town at the mountain’s base, which serves as the starting and ending point for the kora.
Circumambulation Routes: Outer and Inner Kora
The kora is divided into two routes:
- Outer Kora: A 56-kilometer loop around Mount Kailash, typically completed in two days by foot. Accommodation is available near Zutulpuk Temple (elevation ~5,100 meters), with the Mount Kailash Guesthouse recommended.
- Inner Kora: A shorter loop around Chorten Kangnyi on the southern side, undertaken only after completing 13 outer koras.
Tradition holds that Mount Kailash is linked to the horse zodiac sign, and in Tibetan Horse Years, one kora equals 13 regular circuits, attracting throngs of pilgrims. Fit locals and experienced trekkers may finish the outer kora in a day, while most travelers take two.
Kora Journey: Day-by-Day Guide
- Day 1: The route follows a gentle river valley, making it relatively easy. However, precautions against altitude sickness are essential due to the high elevation.
- Day 2: The path from Zutulpuk Temple to Drolma La Pass (5,630 meters) is challenging, spanning 5 kilometers of rocky terrain with a steep 60-degree incline and a 500-meter elevation gain. Pace yourself carefully. At Drolma La Pass, prayer flags mark the summit, offering views of the jade-green Tokji Tso (Compassion Lake). Bathing in the lake is said to purify sins, but its icy snowmelt deters most visitors. The descent is a near-vertical drop—long, steep, and demanding caution. After navigating a marshy grassland and endless slopes, the sight of Naimonanyi Peak signals the kora’s near end. Return to Tarchen for a well-deserved meal.

Practical Tips for Pilgrims and Travelers
- Physical Preparation: The 56-kilometer outer kora at high altitude requires good fitness—proceed with caution if inexperienced.
- Accommodation: Overnight stays in basic mountain lodgings (e.g., Zutulpuk) are common. Bring a down sleeping bag or opt for places with electric blankets and oxygen.
- Porters: Less fit trekkers can hire porters in Tarchen (3-day minimum, ~¥330/day) to carry gear.
- Food and Supplies: Local tents and glass huts along the route offer meals (fried rice, hot water, instant noodles, butter tea). Carry high-calorie snacks and energy drinks.
- Gear: Trekking poles save energy and enhance safety; pack sunscreen and warm clothing.
- Safety: First-time trekkers should join experienced companions or use an offline kora map (e.g., Mount Kailash outer kora track). Avoid unverified “ticket-dodging” advice—altitude and weather risks can be deadly without timely rescue.
- Mapang Yumtso (Lake Manasarovar): A drivable 84-kilometer loop with sandy roads; locals often walk or prostrate. Beware of soft lakeside soil to avoid getting stuck.
- Lodging Options: Temples offer decent stays near Mapang Yumtso. For a unique experience, try the Mapang Yumtso Starry Camp at the visitor center, or stay in Pulan County or Tarchen.
