Introduction to Yamdrok Lake
Yamdrok Lake, known in Tibetan as “Yangzhuo Yongcuo” (meaning “Swan Lake”), is one of Tibet’s three sacred lakes, alongside Namtso and Manasarovar. Often called “Yamdrok Yumtso” or simply “Yang Lake” by locals (since “tso” means “lake” in Tibetan), it lies in Nagarze County, Shannan Prefecture. Situated at an elevation of 4,441 meters, the lake boasts a shoreline of 250 kilometers and a surface area of 638 square kilometers, with an average depth of 20-40 meters. As one of the largest inland lakes on the northern foothills of the Himalayas, its branching inlets resemble coral, earning it the Tibetan nickname “Upper Coral Lake.”
Natural Features and Wildlife
The lake is dotted with over ten small islands. The largest can house five or six families, while the smallest span just over 100 square meters. Yamdrok Lake is rich in aquatic life, including fine-scale fish, Tibetan schizothoracine fish, and plateau naked carp. It also serves as a major habitat for waterfowl in southern Tibet. Each winter, migratory birds such as swans, water pigeons, yellow ducks, fish eagles, and bar-headed geese flock to the lake’s shores and central islands, creating a vibrant seasonal spectacle.

Yamdrok Lake is most stunning from a distance rather than up close. After crossing the 5,030-meter Gangbala Pass, a 30-minute descent along the highway to the lakeshore offers breathtaking views. This route features several scenic platforms where visitors can stop, take photos, and soak in the lake’s mesmerizing beauty against the Himalayan backdrop.
