The Chengdu Panda Base is home to many adorable giant pandas, where you can enjoy up-close views of these beloved national treasures. Located about 10 kilometers north of downtown Chengdu, the base is designed to replicate the natural habitat of the giant panda. It features lakes, streams, bamboo forests, and grassy meadows, offering a serene environment for both pandas and visitors.

Panda Villas and Viewing Experiences

The base has numerous “Panda Villas,” which serve as private leisure areas for the pandas. These spaces include outdoor gardens and indoor rest areas. During cooler weather, pandas can be seen playing in the gardens, and visitors can observe them from behind a barrier. On hot days, pandas retreat to air-conditioned indoor rest areas, where they can only be viewed through glass.

Can You See Pandas in the New Area? What Else Can You Do?

Yes, you can see pandas in the new area as well. This includes our iconic pandas, whose new homes are larger, offering more space for them to roam.

Apart from panda viewing, there’s plenty to enjoy. A must-see is our landmark structure—the famous Panda Tower. As a new symbol of Chengdu, the tower stands at 69.8 meters tall and consists of 11 floors. Its design resembles a bamboo shoot on the outside and a blooming hibiscus flower on the inside. The tower offers 81 viewing platforms, allowing visitors to enjoy panoramic views of the panda base.

Additionally, the newly built Art Museum in the forested area features multi-sensory interactive exhibits, light installations, and heat-sensitive displays, creating an immersive experience for visitors.

Interactive Exhibits and Science Education

The Panda Base plans to install rich, diverse educational signage and interactive facilities in four main areas, helping visitors learn about panda conservation while enhancing their interactive experience. During environmental and animal protection-related holidays, themed educational activities such as interactive lectures, family-friendly workshops, and discovery games will be held for all ages.

For those looking for entertainment, a musical theater production titled Panda will showcase the harmonious coexistence of pandas with the natural beauty of Chengdu. The musical will reflect the city’s livability and the peaceful lifestyle of its people.

Expanded Facilities and Increased Panda Population

The base’s area has expanded from 1,035 acres to 3,570 acres, more than doubling in size. The expansion preserves the original landscape, utilizing the mountain valleys and streams to create multi-layered scenic areas. The project has added 11 panda enclosures, numerous educational facilities, and visitor walkways. After the expansion, the base will house at least 180 pandas, red pandas, golden monkeys, and other rare species. As of now, 67 giant pandas and 43 red pandas have settled into their new homes.

Are the New Area’s Facilities Adequate?

Designed to meet 5A scenic area standards, the new area is equipped with abundant tourist services. Facilities include sightseeing buses, restrooms, and several commercial areas offering food, souvenirs, postal services, a cinema, and educational experiences. After nearly a year of operation, the base has added more beverage machines, water dispensers, and shared services to improve visitor experience. Further enhancements will focus on rest areas, consultation services, and tour guide facilities.

Panda Base’s Role in Conservation and Cultural Tourism

The expanded Chengdu Panda Base will play a key role in preserving pandas, improving scientific research conditions, and protecting biodiversity. It will also showcase the cultural and economic value of pandas, promoting Chengdu’s “Tianfu Three-Nine” brand, which highlights both the region’s natural beauty and lifestyle.

• Students: Undergraduate students (not including adult education) can enter with an ID card and student card. Tickets must be purchased at the entrance if the student requirements are not met.
• Children (Under 6 or 1.3 meters): Free admission without prior reservation, verified with an ID.

• Other Free Admissions (Reservation Required): Active-duty military, retired military, and people with disabilities, among others.
• Taiwan Visitors: Free entry until October 2025 for first-time visitors with an appropriate ID.
