Badaling Great Wall

The Badaling Great Wall is one of the most renowned and historically significant sections of the Great Wall of China, often referred to as one of the “Nine Passes of the World.” This section of the wall is renowned for its magnificent and towering structure, combining breathtaking views with steep, rugged terrain. The Badaling Great Wall is considered the highlight of the Ming Dynasty Great Wall and remains a popular choice for those visiting China. As the saying goes, “He who has never been to the Great Wall is not a true man,” and for many, Badaling is their first destination for conquering the wall.

The Layout of Badaling

Badaling’s fortress is shaped like a trapezoid, with narrow eastern gates and a wide western section. The East Gate is inscribed with the words “Juyong Pass Fortification,” and the West Gate is inscribed with “North Gate Lock and Key.”

  • North Wall: Extends from the fortification with 12 enemy towers along the way, offering spectacular views of the rugged terrain.
  • South Wall: Has 7 enemy towers, which are generally less crowded, making it a great alternative for those looking for a more peaceful experience.

If you have enough time, it’s a good idea to first explore the South Wall and then move to the North Wall for a more comprehensive experience of Badaling.

Climbing the Great Wall

Apart from the main fortress, there are several other entrances where visitors can climb the Great Wall:

  • South 4 Tower, North 4 Tower, North 8 Tower, and North 11 Tower all have entry points to the wall.

Among these, North 8 Tower is the highest point of Badaling at 1,000 meters above sea level. Known as the “Sunrise Viewing Platform,” it offers unparalleled panoramic views of the Great Wall and its surrounding landscape. It’s located about 1,500 meters from the fortress, providing an excellent spot for sightseeing.

Cable Car Experience

For those who prefer not to walk, cable cars are available at both the South 4 Tower and North 8 Tower. This is a convenient way to get to the enemy towers and enjoy the sights without exerting too much effort. Afterward, you can return via the cable car as well, allowing for a more relaxed visit.

Nearby Dining Options

Badaling has a variety of dining options for visitors to refuel after climbing the wall. The scenic area features a commercial pedestrian street at the base, where you can relax and enjoy a meal. In addition to the high-end Badaling Hotel (a foreigner-friendly establishment), there are also many local eateries offering traditional Beijing flavors, such as Zha Jiang Mian (noodles with soybean paste), Goubuli (steamed buns), and dumpling restaurants. If you’re in the mood for quick bites, fast-food chains like Subway and Yonghe Soy Milk are also available.

After your meal, if you’re up for more sightseeing, you can visit the Zhan Tianyou Memorial Hall or the China Great Wall Museum, both located nearby.
