Dujiangyan Scenic Area: A UNESCO World Heritage

Dujiangyan Scenic Area

Overview of Dujiangyan

Located on the main stream of the Minjiang River west of Dujiangyan City, the Dujiangyan Scenic Area is an ancient hydraulic engineering marvel built around 256 BCE by Li Bing, the Qin Dynasty governor of Shu, and his son. Recognized as one of China’s best-preserved ancient water conservancy projects, it consists of three main components—the Yuzui (Fish Mouth) Diversion Embankment, Feisha (Flying Sand) Weir Spillway, and Baopingkou (Bottle-Neck) Water Inlet—along with auxiliary structures like the Baizhang Embankment and Herringbone Embankment. This ingenious system splits the turbulent Minjiang River into an outer channel for flood discharge and an inner channel for irrigation, transforming the Chengdu Plain into the fertile “Land of Abundance.”

Natural Beauty and Cultural Significance

Dujiangyan’s breathtaking scenery—featuring vast blue waters, dramatic cliffs, ancient towering trees, and rugged peaks—combined with its profound historical and cultural value, has earned it a well-deserved spot as a world-renowned scenic destination. Key attractions include the South Bridge, Lidui Ancient Garden, Wotie (卧铁), Yangong Path, Zhangsong Ginkgo, Qingxi Garden, Fulong Temple, the Dujiangyan Canal Headworks (Yuzui, Feisha Weir, Baopingkou), Anlan Bridge, Erwang Temple, Qin Yan Tower, Songmao Ancient Path, Xiuzhi Jingzhishui Virtue Monument, Yuwang Palace, Yulei Pass, Fengqi Nest, Douxi Platform, Xuanwei Gate, and the City God Temple.

Signage improvement

Whenever I want to exit the metro into a mall, there is no signage to tell me which exit I should use. All exitspoint to above ground road name. Its just not one city, it’s every city in China the metro signage is like that. For a foreigner, I just want to get to the mall. Also there is no big map at the station indicating the exit goes to where. I hope metro stations all over China especially major cities can improve on the metro exit signage.
