Can I use regular Internet while traveling in China?

When traveling to China, one of the most common concerns for visitors is internet access. While China has a well-developed digital infrastructure with high-speed internet, there are significant restrictions on websites and online services due to government regulations. In this guide, we’ll explore what you need to know about using the internet in China, which websites are blocked, and how to stay connected while traveling.

1. Is the Internet Different in China?

Yes, the internet in China operates under strict government regulations, commonly referred to as the Great Firewall of China. This means that many websites, apps, and services that are widely used in other countries are restricted or blocked.

Popular websites and apps that are blocked in China include:

  • Google Services (Google Search, Gmail, Google Maps, YouTube, Google Drive)
  • Social Media (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, WhatsApp, Reddit)
  • Western News Websites (The New York Times, BBC, CNN)
  • Streaming Services (Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, Spotify)

However, China has its own internet ecosystem with local alternatives such as:

  • Search Engine: Baidu (instead of Google)
  • Messaging Apps: WeChat (instead of WhatsApp)
  • Video Platforms: Youku, Bilibili (instead of YouTube)
  • Social Media: Weibo, Xiaohongshu (instead of Facebook/Instagram)

2. How Can I Access Blocked Websites in China?

If you need to access websites and services that are blocked in China, you have a few options:

Use a VPN (Virtual Private Network)
  • A VPN allows you to bypass China’s internet restrictions by encrypting your connection and routing it through a server outside China.
  • Important: VPNs are technically restricted in China, and many free or low-quality VPNs do not work. However, some paid VPNs still function if installed before arriving in China.
  • Recommended VPNs: ExpressVPN, NordVPN, Surfshark, Astrill VPN
Use Hong Kong or International Roaming
  • If you have an international SIM card or are using a Hong Kong-based mobile carrier, you may be able to access the unrestricted internet.
  • However, this method can be expensive due to high roaming fees.
Use Chinese Internet Alternatives
  • If you don’t need Google or Western social media, you can use local Chinese apps that provide similar services.
  • WeChat can be used for communication, payments, and even translation.

3. Where Can I Get Internet Access in China?

China has excellent internet coverage, and you can access the internet in multiple ways:

Wi-Fi in Hotels, Cafes, and Public Areas
  • Most hotels, airports, cafes, and shopping malls offer free Wi-Fi.
  • Some public Wi-Fi networks require SMS verification, which may not work with foreign phone numbers.
SIM Cards and eSIMs
  • You can buy a local Chinese SIM card from providers like China Mobile, China Unicom, or China Telecom.
  • Tip: A Hong Kong-based SIM card (such as China Mobile Hong Kong) may provide unfiltered internet access.
Portable Wi-Fi Devices
  • Some travelers rent portable Wi-Fi hotspots, which provide internet access on the go.
  • These are available at airports or online before arriving in China.

4. Internet Security and Privacy in China

  • Public Wi-Fi Caution: Be mindful of security risks when using public Wi-Fi. Avoid logging into sensitive accounts (like online banking) over unsecured networks.
  • Messaging & Calls: WeChat is the primary communication app in China, but it is monitored. Avoid discussing sensitive political topics online.
  • Data Privacy: Internet activity in China is monitored. Using a VPN is the best way to protect your privacy.

While China has a strong internet infrastructure, it operates under different regulations that affect access to many international websites and services. Using a VPN, purchasing a local SIM card, or relying on alternative Chinese apps are the best ways to stay connected. To ensure a smooth internet experience, download necessary apps and set up a VPN before arriving in China.By planning ahead, you can navigate China’s internet landscape and stay connected with ease!

Signage improvement

Whenever I want to exit the metro into a mall, there is no signage to tell me which exit I should use. All exitspoint to above ground road name. Its just not one city, it’s every city in China the metro signage is like that. For a foreigner, I just want to get to the mall. Also there is no big map at the station indicating the exit goes to where. I hope metro stations all over China especially major cities can improve on the metro exit signage.
