What to Do If You Get Sick While Traveling in China?

What to Do If You Get Sick While Traveling in China

Getting sick while traveling can be stressful anywhere—but when it happens in a foreign country with a different language and medical system, anxiety often increases.
The good news is that China has a modern, accessible healthcare system, and foreign travelers are not left without options.

This practical guide explains exactly what to do if you get sick while traveling in China, from mild illnesses to medical emergencies.

Step 1: Stay Calm and Assess the Situation

Not every illness requires a hospital visit.

Minor issues may include:
  • Cold or flu symptoms

  • Stomach discomfort

  • Mild fever

  • Fatigue from jet lag or travel

More serious symptoms include:
  • High fever that does not improve

  • Severe pain

  • Chest discomfort

  • Shortness of breath

  • Injuries from accidents

If symptoms are severe or worsening, seek medical care immediately.

Step 2: Decide Where to Get Medical Help

China offers several medical options depending on your location and condition.

Option 1: International or Private Clinics (Best for Comfort & Language)

Recommended for:

  • Minor to moderate illnesses

  • Travelers who prefer English-speaking doctors

  • Families with children

Advantages:

  • English-speaking staff

  • Appointment-based system

  • Familiar medical environment

Available mainly in large cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen.

Option 2: Public Hospitals (Best for Emergencies & Serious Conditions)

Recommended for:

  • Emergencies

  • Serious injuries or illness

  • Diagnostic tests (CT, MRI, blood work)

Advantages:

  • High medical standards

  • Advanced equipment

  • Affordable costs

Challenges:

  • Limited English

  • Busy environment

Public hospitals are the backbone of China’s healthcare system and are highly reliable.

Step 3: What to Bring With You

When visiting a clinic or hospital, prepare:

  • Your passport

  • Cash, credit card, or mobile payment

  • Travel insurance details (if available)

  • A list of symptoms (written or translated)

Having your hotel staff or travel consultant assist with communication can make the process smoother.

Step 4: What to Expect at the Hospital

Registration

You will register using your passport. At public hospitals, this may involve a counter or self-service kiosk.

Consultation

Doctors in China are professional and efficient. Consultations may feel shorter than in Western countries, but they are focused and effective.

Tests

If tests are needed, they are often done the same day, sometimes within hours.

Payment

Payment is usually required upfront or immediately after services.

Medication

Most hospitals have in-house pharmacies, and prescriptions are filled quickly.

Step 5: Dealing With Language Barriers

English availability varies.

Helpful tips:

  • Use translation apps

  • Show written symptoms

  • Ask hotel staff for assistance

  • Contact your travel consultant if you have one

In many cases, simple communication is enough to receive proper treatment.

Step 6: Pharmacies and Over-the-Counter Medication

For mild symptoms, pharmacies (yao dian) are widely available.

You can often buy:

  • Cold medicine

  • Fever reducers

  • Stomach medicine

However:

  • Brand names differ

  • Dosages may vary

If unsure, consult a doctor instead of self-medicating.

Step 7: What to Do in a Medical Emergency

If the situation is urgent:

  • Call 120 for a medical ambulance

  • Ask hotel staff to assist immediately

  • Contact your travel consultant or local emergency contact

Emergency departments in major Chinese hospitals operate 24/7.

Step 8: Costs and Insurance

Medical care in China is generally more affordable than in many Western countries, especially at public hospitals.

Important notes:

  • Many hospitals require upfront payment

  • Keep all receipts for insurance claims

  • International clinics often assist with insurance paperwork

Travel insurance is strongly recommended for all visitors.

Step 9: Is It Safe to Get Medical Treatment in China?

Yes. Hospitals in major Chinese cities:

  • Follow strict hygiene standards

  • Use modern medical technology

  • Employ licensed physicians

Many travelers are surprised by how efficient and professional the experience is.

Signage improvement

Whenever I want to exit the metro into a mall, there is no signage to tell me which exit I should use. All exitspoint to above ground road name. Its just not one city, it’s every city in China the metro signage is like that. For a foreigner, I just want to get to the mall. Also there is no big map at the station indicating the exit goes to where. I hope metro stations all over China especially major cities can improve on the metro exit signage.
