Shanghai and Beyond: A 4-Day Modern China Experience
Exploring Shanghai over four days gave me a sharp, refreshing look at China’s fast-paced urban life mixed with surprising pockets of history and culture. Beyond the city’s famous skyline, I found modern art, futuristic transport, and vibrant neighborhoods that paint a real picture of today’s China.
Day 1: First Impressions of Shanghai’s Futuristic Pulse
When I first stepped out of Shanghai Pudong Airport, the city’s buzz hit me immediately. Skyscrapers like the Shanghai Tower and the iconic Oriental Pearl Tower dominate the skyline, and at night, they light up in ways that feel like a sci-fi movie set.
For a true feel of modern Shanghai, I recommend starting at Lujiazui in Pudong. You can take the elevator up Shanghai Tower’s observation deck — it’s the second tallest building in the world. The views of the Huangpu River snaking through the city are breathtaking.
Later, I wandered through the neighboring Financial District to catch a glimpse of business culture in action before heading to the Bund for sunset. The Bund’s colonial-era architecture sharply contrasts with Pudong’s glass giants, showing Shanghai’s fascinating history alongside its future.
If you’re hungry by then, try some xiaolongbao (soup dumplings) at a local spot like Nanxiang Steamed Bun Restaurant. The soup inside the dumplings is rich and savory, a real comfort after hours of city exploring.
Day 2: Art, Coffee, and Old Streets
The second day felt less like a city tour and more like walking through a living art exhibit and a local neighborhood hub. I started at the M50 Creative Park, a converted warehouse district now packed with galleries and studios. Unlike the glossy museums, this place felt raw and real, with street art and edgy installations.
From there, I took a short taxi ride to Tianzifang, a maze of narrow alleys full of boutiques, quirky cafes, and craft shops. The vibe is laid-back—perfect for a slow morning coffee and people watching. I picked up some handmade souvenirs and chatted with a few shop owners who were happy to share stories about Shanghai life.
In the afternoon, I gave myself a break from the urban pace with a visit to Yu Garden. While it’s more traditional than modern, this beautifully preserved Ming Dynasty garden reminded me that Shanghai’s roots still hold firm beneath its steel and glass.
Day 3: Beyond Shanghai—Wuzhen Water Town
On day three, I left the city for a taste of something different. About 90 minutes away by car is Wuzhen, one of China’s famous water towns. If you only have time for one day trip outside Shanghai, I highly suggest this.
Wuzhen’s canals and stone bridges make it feel like stepping into an old Chinese painting. It’s not just a tourist trap — the narrow lanes are filled with locals selling handcrafts and snacks. I found a small tea house where I spent a quiet hour sipping green tea and watching life drift by on wooden boats.
Back in Shanghai by evening, I dined at a modern restaurant in the French Concession district, where historic tree-lined streets meet hip eateries and bars. The food scene here is broad, but I went for a fusion take on traditional dishes that left me pleasantly surprised.
Day 4: High-Tech Transportation and Local Markets
Shanghai’s subway system is a wonder of efficiency and technology. On my final day, I decided to use it to explore more local neighborhoods. I hopped off at Jing’an Temple station and strolled through the surrounding area, which has a lively market selling everything from fresh produce to street snacks.
I also visited the Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Center. It’s a fascinating exhibit showing how the city has evolved and plans to grow in the coming decades — a must-visit if you like architecture and urban design.
For lunch, I ducked into a tiny dumpling shop recommended by a local friend. No English menu, just pointing and smiling, but the flavors were authentic and memorable. It reminded me that some of the best experiences come from stepping outside tourist zones and trusting your instincts.
Before heading to the airport, I enjoyed a quiet moment at Century Park, a green oasis with lakes and walking trails—a perfect way to wind down after days of fast city life.
FAQ
Q: How do I get around Shanghai efficiently?
A: The metro system is by far the best way. It’s fast, affordable, and easy to navigate with English signage. Taxis are also plentiful but watch for traffic during rush hour.
Q: Is it necessary to speak Mandarin to enjoy Shanghai?
A: Not at all. Many people, especially younger generations and those in tourist areas, understand basic English. Having a translation app helps, especially in markets or small eateries.
Q: Can I visit water towns like Wuzhen without a tour?
A: Yes, absolutely. It’s simple to get there by car or bus. Tours exist, but independent travelers can enjoy the town at their own pace and avoid crowded group schedules.

Signage improvement
Whenever I want to exit the metro into a mall, there is no signage to tell me which exit I should use. All exitspoint to above ground road name. Its just not one city, it’s every city in China the metro signage is like that. For a foreigner, I just want to get to the mall. Also there is no big map at the station indicating the exit goes to where. I hope metro stations all over China especially major cities can improve on the metro exit signage.
