Key Attractions in Guizhou

Guizhou is blessed with spectacular natural scenery, from dramatic mountains to lush forests, along with a wealth of ethnic minority culture. Here are the top attractions you should not miss when visiting this beautiful province.

1. Huangguoshu Waterfall

Huangguoshu Waterfall, located near Anshun in Guizhou, is one of the largest and most impressive waterfalls in China. It stands at 77.8 meters tall and 101 meters wide, making it a breathtaking sight. The falls are surrounded by dense forests, and there are several viewpoints where visitors can admire the full grandeur of the waterfall.

  • Best time to visit: Spring and summer (April to October) are ideal for seeing the waterfall at its fullest flow, especially after heavy rains.
  • How to get there: The waterfall is about a 1.5-hour drive from Anshun city, and regular buses are available from Guiyang (the provincial capital).
2. The Miao and Dong Villages

Guizhou is home to several ethnic minorities, with the Miao and Dong people being the most prominent. Their villages, which are scattered throughout the province, offer travelers a unique opportunity to explore traditional wooden architecture, colorful clothing, and distinct customs.

  • Top villages to visit:
    • Zhaoxing Village (Dong people): Famous for its large wooden drum towers, Zhaoxing is the largest Dong village in China.
    • Langde Miao Village: A charming Miao village where you can experience traditional Miao dress and participate in local festivals.
  • Cultural highlights: Traditional folk dances, silver jewelry-making, and vibrant festivals like the Miao New Year.
  • How to get there: These villages can be accessed by bus from Guiyang or other regional hubs. Hiring a local guide is recommended for deeper cultural immersion.
3. Jiabang Rice Terraces

Located in the southeastern part of the province, the Jiabang Rice Terraces are often considered one of the most beautiful in China. Carved into the hillsides by the Buyi people, the terraces are particularly stunning when the rice fields are flooded during the planting season, creating a mirror effect that reflects the sky and surrounding mountains.

  • Best time to visit: The terraces are most beautiful in May and June, during the rice planting season, when the fields are filled with water.
  • How to get there: Jiabang can be reached by bus from Guiyang (about 4 hours), or you can take a train to nearby Congjiang and then continue by bus.
4. Fanjing Mountain

Fanjing Mountain, located in the northern part of Guizhou, is a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its unique natural beauty and religious significance. The mountain is home to many Buddhist temples, including the famous Fanjing Temple, and features dramatic cliffs, lush forests, and diverse wildlife.

  • Activities: Hiking to the summit, visiting Buddhist temples, and taking a cable car to see panoramic views of the mountain range.
  • How to get there: Fanjing Mountain can be accessed from the city of Tongren (about 2.5 hours by car), which has train and bus connections from Guiyang.
5. Qianling Park

Located in Guiyang, Qianling Park is a large urban park that is perfect for those looking to escape the bustle of the city. The park is home to lush greenery, a large lake, and an ancient temple. It is also famous for its population of wild monkeys, which are a popular attraction for visitors.

  • How to get there: Located just 10 minutes by car from Guiyang’s city center.

Local Culture and Ethnic Traditions

Guizhou is home to many ethnic minorities, including the Miao, Dong, and Buyi people. Each group has its own distinct language, customs, and festivals. Learning about these cultures is one of the highlights of visiting Guizhou.

Miao and Dong Festivals
  • Miao New Year: Celebrated in late fall (usually November), this is one of the most vibrant festivals in Guizhou. The Miao people celebrate with singing, dancing, and traditional rituals. You can also witness the stunning beauty of the Miao women in their elaborate silver jewelry and clothing.
  • Dong New Year: Held in December or January, the Dong people celebrate their new year with their famous drum performances, traditional feasts, and the famous “Dong Drum Tower” dance.
Traditional Handicrafts

Guizhou is also known for its unique handicrafts, including silver jewelry, embroidery, and batik fabric. Visitors can explore local markets to purchase these beautiful pieces, which are often made using traditional techniques passed down through generations.

Adventure and Outdoor Activities

Guizhou offers ample opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts. From hiking and trekking to exploring caves and rivers, the province’s dramatic landscapes make it a paradise for adventure travelers.

1. Cave Exploration

Guizhou is home to numerous caves, including the Zhijin Cave, one of the largest limestone caves in China. The cave features stunning stalactites and stalagmites, as well as underground rivers. Many caves are part of eco-tourism initiatives and offer guided tours.

2. Rafting and Kayaking

The Wuyang River, located near the town of Anshun, is an excellent spot for rafting and kayaking. The river is surrounded by limestone karsts and offers a scenic and thrilling experience for adventurers.

3. Trekking in Fanjing Mountain

If you’re into hiking, Fanjing Mountain provides several trails ranging from easy walks to challenging climbs. The mountain’s peak offers one of the best panoramic views in Guizhou and is a rewarding destination for nature lovers.

Best Time to Visit Guizhou

Guizhou has a subtropical climate with mild winters and warm, humid summers. The best time to visit is during spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) when the weather is pleasant and the landscapes are at their most beautiful. Avoid visiting during the summer months (June to August) if you dislike humidity, as it can be quite hot and rainy.

How to Get to Guizhou

Guizhou is accessible by air, train, and bus:

  • Air: Guiyang Longdongbao International Airport is the main airport in Guizhou and is connected to most major cities in China. There are also smaller airports in Anshun and Tongren.

  • Bus: Guizhou is well-served by long-distance buses from neighboring provinces and cities.

Practical Tips for Traveling in Guizhou

  • Language: While Mandarin is widely spoken in Guizhou, many ethnic minorities speak their own languages. Learning a few basic Chinese phrases can be very helpful, especially when traveling to rural areas.
  • Transportation: Public transportation is available, but in remote areas, it’s better to hire a local guide or rent a car for convenience.

Signage improvement

Whenever I want to exit the metro into a mall, there is no signage to tell me which exit I should use. All exitspoint to above ground road name. Its just not one city, it’s every city in China the metro signage is like that. For a foreigner, I just want to get to the mall. Also there is no big map at the station indicating the exit goes to where. I hope metro stations all over China especially major cities can improve on the metro exit signage.
