Yumen Pass, colloquially known as the "Small Square-Panel City" (Xiao Fangpan Cheng), is situated in the Gobi Desert approximately 90 kilometers northwest of Dunhuang, Gansu Province, at the westernmost extremity of the Hexi Corridor. Established during the reign of Emperor Wu of the Western Han Dynasty (circa 111 BCE), it derives its name—"Jade Gate Pass"—from the fact that precious jade from Khotan in the Western Regions was transported into the Central Plains through this location. Together with Yang Pass to the southwest, it served as one of the two vital gateways connecting the Han Dynasty to the Western Regions. As a crucial bottleneck along the Silk Road and a designated World Heritage Site, Yumen Pass has inspired countless poets and writers throughout history to compose verses that capture its magnificent yet desolate atmosphere. Perhaps the most well-known of these is a line from Wang Zhihuan’s *Liangzhou Ci*: "Why play the flute to lament the absence of willows? The spring breeze never blows past Yumen Pass."
