Located in Pingyao County, Jinzhong City, Shanxi Province, the Ancient City of Pingyao is the best-preserved ancient city in China. It serves as a unique example that showcases the original layout and character of a traditional Chinese historic city. From the 19th century to the early 20th century, Pingyao functioned as the epicenter of the entire Chinese financial industry.
With a long history spanning nearly 2,800 years, Pingyao’s origins date back to the reign of King Xuan of the Western Zhou Dynasty (827–782 BC). The current ancient city was constructed during the Hongwu reign of the Ming Dynasty (1370 AD) and covers an area of 225 hectares. The city’s overall configuration resembles a tortoise crawling toward the south, earning it the nickname "Tortoise City."
