Located in Linfen, Shanxi Province, the Hukou Waterfall is the only large-scale, yellow-hued waterfall on the Yellow River and the second-largest waterfall in China; it is widely acclaimed as a "wonder of the Yellow River." It is situated in the middle section of the Jin-Shaan (Shanxi-Shaanxi) Canyon—along the southern reach of the Yellow River’s main northern course—between Ji County in Shanxi Province and Yichuan County in Shaanxi Province. The site lies 38 kilometers east of the seat of Ji County and 40 kilometers west of the seat of Yichuan County, covering a planned area of 116 square kilometers.
Centered around the Hukou Waterfall, this scenic area encompasses the Yellow River Canyon, the Loess Plateau, and ancient villages, showcasing both the natural landscapes of the Yellow River Basin and its profound historical and cultural heritage.
The Hukou Scenic Area has received numerous accolades, including being designated a "National Key Scenic Spot," one of the "Top 40 Tourist Destinations in China," a "National Base for Study-Tour Education," a "National Geopark," and a "National 5A-Level Tourist Attraction." It is also included on the list of China’s national natural heritage sites and was selected as one of the "35 Premier Scenic Attractions in China to Showcase to the World." On January 17, 2023, it was named one of the first "Cultural Memory Projects of Shanxi."
