The Du Fu Thatched Cottage Museum in Chengdu marks the former residence of the great Tang Dynasty poet Du Fu—revered as the "Sage of Poetry"—during his time living in Chengdu. In the winter of 759 AD, seeking refuge from the An Lushan Rebellion, Du Fu arrived in Chengdu with his family; the following year, he built a thatched cottage by the banks of the Huanhua Stream. He resided there for nearly four years, composing over 240 poems that have endured through the ages, including such celebrated works as "The Prime Minister of Shu" and "Song of My Thatched Cottage Unroofed by the Autumn Wind." From its humble beginnings as a small, one-mu plot with a simple thatched dwelling, the site has evolved into a national first-class museum spanning nearly 300 mu. Today, it serves as both a memorial shrine and a classical garden, standing as a hallowed site for Chinese literature.
