The Ultimate 2026 Packing & Prohibited Items Guide
Avoid Customs Fines & Confiscations: What Foreign Travelers Must Know Before Flying to China.
Rule of Thumb: When in doubt, leave it out or declare it at the Red Channel.
Packing for Your China Adventure?
You’ve booked your flights and planned your itinerary for the Great Wall, the Forbidden City, and the pandas. But before you zip up that suitcase, there’s one critical step many travelers overlook: China Customs Compliance.
Due to strict biosecurity laws and unique regulations, many everyday items found in US or European supermarkets are illegal to bring into China. This guide simplifies the complex rules into a clear checklist, ensuring your arrival in Beijing, Shanghai, or Chengdu is as smooth as your departure.
1. The “Never Pack” List (Strictly Prohibited)
These items are banned for everyone. Possession of these upon arrival can lead to serious legal consequences.
🔫 Weapons & Imitations
- Real Weapons: Firearms, ammunition, explosives.
- Controlled Knives: Switchblades, daggers, or any blade over a certain length.
- Replicas: Realistic toy guns, replica swords, or police equipment (batons/handcuffs). Note: Even high-quality cosplay props can be confiscated.
💊 Narcotics & CBD
- Illegal Drugs: Heroin, cocaine, marijuana, etc. (Zero tolerance policy).
- CBD Products: This is a common trap. CBD oils, gummies, creams, or vape cartridges are strictly prohibited in China, even if legal in your home country.
- Unapproved Meds: Psychotropic drugs without a doctor’s prescription and official translation.
📜 Sensitive Materials
- Prints, films, or digital media deemed detrimental to China’s politics or culture.
- Fake currency, counterfeit goods, or gambling tools.
2. Food & Biosecurity: What Gets Confiscated?
China takes agricultural security very seriously. Most food items brought by tourists will be sniffer-dog detected and thrown away.
🥩 All Meat Products
- NO: Beef jerky, pork floss, sausages, ham, bacon, canned meat (unless commercially sterile and declared, but risky).
- Reason: Risk of African Swine Fever and other animal diseases.
🍎 Fresh Produce
- NO: Fresh fruits, vegetables, seeds, nuts, and soil.
- YES (Usually): Commercially packaged, processed snacks (chips, cookies, chocolate) without meat fillings.
🐾 Animals & Souvenirs
- NO: Live pets (without complex prior quarantine), fresh flowers.
- NO: Ivory, rhino horn, tiger bone, or coral products (CITES violations).
3. Restricted Items: Declare These!
You can bring these, but you must follow specific rules or use the Red Channel at customs.
- Cash: Limit is 20,000 RMB or $5,000 USD (or equivalent). Anything above must be declared.
- Drones: Allowed for personal hobby use but must be declared. Remember, flying them in China requires strict adherence to local no-fly zones (most city centers are restricted).
- Prescription Medicine: Only for personal use. Keep in original packaging with a doctor’s note. Strong painkillers or ADHD meds may require special permits.
- Tobacco & Alcohol: Duty-free allowance: 400 cigarettes (or 100 cigars) AND 1.5L of alcohol (>12%).
