What Is an Invitation Letter?
An invitation letter provides key information about your visit, including:
- Purpose of visit
- Expected duration of stay
- Planned locations
It is required for most visa types, such as:
- Business Visa (M)
- Work Visa (Z)
- Family Reunion Visa (Q)
- Travel Visa (L) (with some exceptions)
Who Can Provide an Invitation Letter?
The provider of the letter depends on the purpose of your visit:
Travel:
- Tour Groups/Travel Agencies: If you are part of a tour group or using an official travel agency, they will typically provide the invitation letter.
- Friends/Family: For independent travel, any Chinese resident or foreign acquaintance in China can draft the letter, explaining the purpose of your visit.
Business or Work:
- Must be issued by a Chinese company, such as trade partners, business clients, factories, or trade fairs.
- The letter should include an official stamp from the local government bureau.
Travel Without an Invitation Letter
If you are planning your trip independently and don’t know anyone in China to provide an invitation letter, you can use the following documents as alternatives:
- Round-trip flight tickets: Ensure they cover your full travel dates.
- Hotel reservations: Include a complete list of confirmed bookings for your stay, with no gaps in your itinerary.
Tip: If you’re worried about costs, many flights and hotels offer refundable booking options. These can be canceled after you secure your visa—just check the refund policies beforehand.
What Should an Invitation Letter Include?
An invitation letter must include details about you (the applicant) and the inviter (sponsor):
Information About You
- Full name, gender, nationality, date of birth, and passport number
- Relationship with the inviter
- Purpose of visit, expected arrival/departure dates, and intended locations
- Details on who will finance your trip (yourself or the inviter)
Information About the Inviter
- Full name, gender, nationality, address (home or company), and contact details (email and phone)
- Residence status in China (proof may be required)
- For businesses: Include the registered business license or certificate with an official company stamp
- Signature of the inviter
