Sichuan, Without the Headache
Five UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The world's most famous bears. China's most addictive cuisine. And a 10-day visa-free window through Chengdu. But the distances are real, the language barrier is steep, and Jiuzhaigou does not sell tickets at the gate. We handle the logistics so you experience the province — not the friction.
Plan My Sichuan TripNo cost. No commitment. A draft itinerary within 24 hours.
Why Sichuan Punishes the Unprepared Traveler
Sichuan is China's most generous province on paper: pandas, mountains, temples, lakes in impossible shades of turquoise, and a food culture that has conquered the world. But the province is also enormous — roughly the size of France — and its best sights sit at opposite corners. Jiuzhaigou is a 1.5-hour bullet train ride from Chengdu, then another 2 hours by mountain bus. Leshan is a separate day south. Emei is yet another destination. None of them speak English. All of them require pre-booked tickets, sometimes weeks in advance. Get one link wrong and you burn a travel day standing in the wrong queue. This page explains how to avoid that.
Jiuzhaigou Tickets Sell Out — Every Day
Jiuzhaigou caps visitors at 41,000 per day. During October (peak autumn color) and Chinese holidays, tickets vanish in minutes. There is no walk-up counter in English. If you show up without a reservation, you do not enter. Period. The booking platform is a Chinese-language WeChat mini-program. We pre-book everything before you land.
Five Destinations, Four Directions
Jiuzhaigou sits north, Mount Emei and Leshan south, Chengdu in the center, and a side trip to Dujiangyan pulls west. Connecting these without a private vehicle means navigating four different bus stations, three train ticket apps, and a WeChat mini-program for Jiuzhaigou entry. A wrong sequence doubles your travel time.
The "English Menu" Hotpot Trap
The best hotpot restaurants in Chengdu have no English. Zero. The menu is a checkbox sheet listing 60+ ingredients you order by ticking boxes — tripe, aorta, duck intestine, pig brain. There is nothing wrong with any of those, but showing up without a guide means guessing between "spicy beef" and "beef omasum" while the broth boils over.
What we actually do: Pre-book every ticket before your flight lands — Jiuzhaigou entry passes, Panda Base reservations, Leshan boat tickets, Emei cable cars. Arrange a driver for the entire route so Chengdu → Leshan → Emei → Jiuzhaigou is one continuous trip, not four separate logistics puzzles. Put a guide at your table when the hotpot checkbox menu arrives. The rest of this page explains the geography, the options, and what a real itinerary looks like.
Three Ways to Do Sichuan (Pick Your Intensity)
Not everyone has two weeks, and not everyone wants to hike a mountain. Below are three route frameworks — each hits the essentials at a different pace.
Chengdu + Jiuzhaigou Loop
Pandas, hotpot, and five-color lakes. One day in Chengdu (Panda Base in the morning, Jinli at night), bullet train to Jiuzhaigou the next morning, two full days inside the park, then back to Chengdu for a final food crawl in the old quarter. This is the itinerary most travelers picture when they type "Sichuan" into a search bar. Best April–June for green valleys, October for autumn color.
Rough cost range: $900–$1,400 per person (hotels, driver, tickets, guide, train)
Chengdu + Leshan + Emei
Three World Heritage Sites in a tight southbound loop. Day one in Chengdu (Panda Base, tea house). Day two: bullet train 1 hour south to Leshan for the 71-meter Buddha, then continue to Emeishan base. Days three and four: ascend Mount Emei — cable car to Golden Summit at 3,079 meters, sunrise over the sea of clouds, wild monkeys along the trail. Back to Chengdu by evening. Shorter than the Jiuzhaigou trip, less driving, higher cultural density.
Rough cost range: $600–$900 per person
Full Sichuan: All Five UNESCO Sites
The complete sweep. Chengdu → Dujiangyan (2,200-year-old irrigation system still working) → Mount Qingcheng (birthplace of Taoism) → Leshan → Emei → back to Chengdu → bullet train to Jiuzhaigou → Huanglong (travertine terraces) → return Chengdu. Five UNESCO sites, two mountain summits, one panda encounter, and enough Sichuan peppercorn to numb a small town. This is for travelers who want to say they saw it all.
Rough cost range: $1,600–$2,500 per person
Not sure which one fits? The biggest variable is Jiuzhaigou. If you have 6+ days and can handle a mountain transfer, include it — it is a genuinely unrepeatable landscape. If you have 5 days or less, the Leshan+Emei loop gives you three UNESCO sites with half the driving. Tell us your available dates and we will propose a route calibrated to your time budget.
Sichuan by the Numbers: Every Stop, Explained
Sichuan is the size of France. The table below lays out the province's essential stops from Chengdu outward, with real distances and transit times — so you can see at a glance how they connect.
| Destination | What It Is | From Chengdu | Best Month | Time Needed |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Chengdu Panda Base | The world's premier giant panda breeding and research center. Morning is best — pandas eat bamboo from 8 AM to 10 AM, then sleep the rest of the day. | 40 min taxi from city center | Mar–May, Sep–Nov | 3–4 hours |
| Chengdu City | Tea houses in People's Park, Jinli Ancient Street at night, Wenshu Monastery's vegetarian restaurant, and the world's best street food scene south of the Yangtze. | — | Mar–Jun, Sep–Nov | 2–3 days |
| Dujiangyan | A 2,200-year-old irrigation system engineered by Li Bing that tamed the Min River and turned Sichuan into the "Land of Abundance." Still working. Still mind-bending. UNESCO. | 30 min by intercity train | Apr–Oct | Half day |
| Mount Qingcheng | The birthplace of Taoism, draped in mist and cypress. Front mountain has temples and pilgrims; back mountain has waterfalls and near-zero crowds. UNESCO. | 40 min by train (adjacent to Dujiangyan) | May–Oct | 1 day |
| Leshan Giant Buddha | A 71-meter seated Buddha carved into a cliff face at the confluence of three rivers, completed in 803 AD. Best viewed from a boat on the river — you see the full scale without the 2-hour staircase queue. UNESCO. | 1 hr by high-speed train | Mar–May, Sep–Nov | Half day |
| Mount Emei | One of China's four sacred Buddhist mountains. Golden Summit at 3,079m delivers sunrise above a sea of clouds, with a 48-meter gilded statue of Samantabhadra. Wild Tibetan macaques line the trail. UNESCO. | 1.5 hrs by train + 2 hrs bus to summit | May–Oct | 1–2 days |
| Jiuzhaigou Valley | Five-color lakes, multi-tier waterfalls, and snow-capped peaks at 2,000–4,500m. The 2017 earthquake closed it for two years; the restored park is better managed than ever. UNESCO. Cap: 41,000 visitors/day. Book weeks ahead. | 1.5–2 hrs bullet train + 2 hrs bus | Oct (autumn color); May–Jun (green) | 2 full days |
| Huanglong | Travertine terraces cascading down a valley at 3,200–3,600m, glowing gold, turquoise, and emerald in sunlight. Often paired with Jiuzhaigou on the same trip. UNESCO. | Same train to Huanglongjiuzhai Station, 40 min bus | May–Oct (closed in winter) | Half day |
| Langzhong Ancient City | A perfectly preserved 2,300-year-old city with intact Ming and Qing architecture, fengshui-aligned streets, and vinegar workshops that have operated for centuries. No crowds. No tour buses. | 2.5 hrs by high-speed train | Mar–Jun, Sep–Nov | 1–2 days |
A note on altitude: Chengdu sits at 500m. Jiuzhaigou Park ranges from 2,000–3,100m. Huanglong reaches 3,600m at its highest terrace. Mount Emei's Golden Summit is 3,079m. Most travelers adjust within 24 hours if they hydrate and ascend gradually, but Huanglong on day one of arrival is a bad idea. We sequence the itinerary so you climb slowly — Dujiangyan first, then Jiuzhaigou, then Huanglong on day two or three.
Eating Sichuan: A Field Guide
Sichuan cuisine is not "spicy food." It is the world's most sophisticated play on numbing heat, fermented depth, and sweet-sour balance. The pepper that defines it is not chili — it is the Sichuan peppercorn (hua jiao), which produces a tingling, almost electric numbness called ma. Below is what to order and where.
| Dish | What You're Eating | Price | Where |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sichuan Hotpot | A split pot of chili oil broth and mild broth, into which you dip raw ingredients — thinly sliced beef, tripe, goose intestine, lotus root, tofu skin. The social ritual of Chengdu. Locals queue for an hour at the good places. | 80–150 RMB per person | Shu Daxia, Xiaolongkan, Dalongyi |
| Mapo Tofu | Silken tofu cubes in a crimson sauce of fermented broad bean paste, minced beef, Sichuan peppercorn, and chili oil. The benchmark dish of Sichuan cooking — if a restaurant gets this wrong, leave. | 30–50 RMB | Chen Mapo Tofu (the 1862 original on Qingyang District) |
| Kung Pao Chicken | Diced chicken stir-fried with peanuts, dried chilies, and Sichuan peppercorn. Not the syrupy version served in Western takeout — the real dish is dry, fragrant, with heat that builds across the palate rather than punching upfront. | 40–60 RMB | Most Sichuan restaurants; Ming Ting is a reliable pick |
| Dan Dan Noodles | A deceptively small bowl: wheat noodles under minced pork, preserved mustard greens, chili oil, and sesame paste. Stir before eating. The best versions cost pocket change and are served from a cart or a street-side window. | 10–15 RMB | Street stalls near Wenshu Monastery; Dongzikou Dan Dan Noodles |
| Zhong Dumplings | Pork dumplings drenched in sweet soy sauce and chili oil, a Chengdu street food staple since the Qing dynasty. Sidestreet stalls are almost always better than restaurant versions. | 12–18 RMB | Zhong Dumplings flagship near Chunxi Road |
| Twice-Cooked Pork | Pork belly boiled, sliced, then wok-fried with fermented black beans, garlic sprouts, and chili paste. The most ordered dish in Sichuan households. Not the spiciest thing on the table, but the deepest. | 35–50 RMB | Any decent Sichuan restaurant; Yulin area has a concentration |
How we help with food: We arrange a guide for your first hotpot meal — someone who translates the checkbox menu, explains which ingredients cook for how long, and makes sure you taste the full range (yes, including the tripe; no, not the pig brain unless you ask for it). After that, you will have enough food vocabulary to explore on your own.
A Real 8-Day Sichuan Itinerary (Chengdu + Jiuzhaigou)
This is the most requested route — pandas in Chengdu, turquoise lakes in Jiuzhaigou, golden terraces at Huanglong, all on one ticket. Below is what an actual trip looks like, day by day.
| Day | Where | What Happens |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Arrive Chengdu | Driver meets you at Tianfu or Shuangliu Airport. Settle into hotel. Evening walk through Jinli Ancient Street — red lanterns, Sichuan opera face-changing, snack alley. Light dinner so your stomach adjusts. |
| 2 | Chengdu | Panda Base at 8 AM sharp (pandas are active, crowds are thin). Late morning: People's Park tea house — order a cup of jasmine tea, watch locals play mahjong. Lunch: Mapo Tofu at Chen's 1862 original. Afternoon: Wenshu Monastery, then a guided hotpot dinner with menu translation. |
| 3 | Chengdu → Jiuzhaigou | Morning bullet train Chengdu East → Huanglongjiuzhai Station (1h 40min). Private transfer 2 hours to Jiuzhaigou entrance area. Check into hotel near the park gate. Rest, hydrate, acclimatize to 2,000m. |
| 4 | Jiuzhaigou — Day 1 | Full day inside the park. Enter at opening. Follow the Y-shaped valley: Nuorilang Waterfall (widest travertine waterfall in China), Five Flower Lake (the famous turquoise one), Arrow Bamboo Lake, Panda Lake. Park shuttle buses run between sights. Lunch inside the park. Exit by 5 PM. |
| 5 | Jiuzhaigou — Day 2 + Huanglong | Morning: revisit favorite spots in Jiuzhaigou or explore the Zechawa Valley branch (Long Lake, Five-Color Pond). Afternoon: drive 40 minutes to Huanglong, ride cable car up, walk down through the golden travertine terraces. Return to hotel. You will be tired. It is worth it. |
| 6 | Jiuzhaigou → Chengdu | Morning transfer to Huanglongjiuzhai Station. Bullet train back to Chengdu (arrive by early afternoon). Free afternoon: explore Kuanzhai Alley, shop for Sichuan pepper and Pixian bean paste as souvenirs. Evening: second hotpot or a milder Sichuan dinner if your stomach needs a break. |
| 7 | Side Trip (optional) | Choose one: Dujiangyan + Mount Qingcheng (Taoism, ancient engineering, 30-min train), or Leshan Giant Buddha (71m statue, 1-hr train, boat view recommended). Both return to Chengdu same day. Or skip the side trip and spend the day eating your way through Yulin district. |
| 8 | Depart Chengdu | Driver to airport. If departing late, morning at a tea house for one last cup of jasmine tea before the flight. |
Estimated cost: $1,100–$1,500 per person. Includes 4-star hotels, private driver/guide, all tickets, train tickets, breakfasts. Excludes international flights and dinners. Price varies by season — October is the most expensive month for Jiuzhaigou hotels.
This is a template, not a fixed product. Some travelers swap Day 7 for an extra day at Jiuzhaigou. Others drop Huanglong and add Leshan instead. Couples with young children slow the pace to 10 days. The itinerary bends to your constraints — not the other way around.
When to Go — and What It Costs
Sichuan's price curve is steeper than most Chinese provinces because Jiuzhaigou's hotel rates triple during the autumn color window. Below is what to expect across the year.
| Season | Months | Weather | Price Level | The Reality |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Spring | Mar–May | 15–25°C in Chengdu; 5–15°C in Jiuzhaigou | Moderate | Green valleys, blooming wildflowers, comfortable temperatures everywhere. The most balanced window. Avoid the first week of May (Labor Day) — domestic tourism peaks. |
| Summer | Jun–Aug | 28–35°C in Chengdu; 15–22°C in Jiuzhaigou | Low–Moderate | Chengdu is hot and humid, but Jiuzhaigou is a cool mountain escape at 20°C. Emei and Qingcheng are also cooler at altitude. Rainy, but the waterfalls are at full force. Best for travelers who want green landscapes over autumn color. |
| Autumn | Sep–Nov | 15–25°C in Chengdu; 5–15°C in Jiuzhaigou | High (October = highest) | This is why people come to Jiuzhaigou. Mid-October: the valley turns red, gold, orange reflected in turquoise lakes. It is the most photographed landscape in China for a reason. Jiuzhaigou hotels double or triple in price. Book 2–3 months ahead. Avoid first week of October (National Day). |
| Winter | Dec–Feb | 5–10°C in Chengdu; -5–5°C in Jiuzhaigou | Low | Huanglong closes (too icy). Jiuzhaigou stays open and is stunning under snow — frozen waterfalls, near-empty boardwalks, hotel rooms at 40% of autumn price. You need warm clothing and patience with potential snow delays. A niche but rewarding window. |
Why Use Us Instead of Booking DIY
| What You Need | DIY Reality | Our Approach |
|---|---|---|
| Jiuzhaigou tickets | Chinese-language WeChat mini-program. No English interface. Sells out in minutes during peak season. No walk-up counter accepts foreign passports without prior registration. | Pre-booked and confirmed before your flight lands. We monitor availability daily and adjust the itinerary if a date sells out. |
| Jiuzhaigou train + bus | Train ticket requires Chinese ID or passport verification at a station counter (not online for foreigners on some platforms). Bus from station to park gate requires WeChat mini-program "JiuYue Travel" — no English. Miss the connection, wait hours. | Private driver handles the entire Chengdu→station→park transfer. No bus queues. No missed connections. |
| Multi-city logistics | Chengdu→Leshan→Emei→Chengdu→Jiuzhaigou means booking six separate train tickets, four hotel check-ins, and coordinating luggage storage between stops. | One driver, one vehicle, one continuous route. Luggage stays in the car. You walk into each destination with nothing but a daypack. |
| Food & dining | The best restaurants have no English menu. Translation apps struggle with dish names like "husband and wife lung slices" (it is beef offal, and it is delicious). Ordering hotpot ingredients without guidance means guessing at a 60-item checkbox sheet. | Guide accompanies your first hotpot meal. We translate the menu, explain cooking times, recommend dishes, and make sure you taste the classics before you go exploring on your own. |
| Altitude planning | Arrive at 500m, fly to 3,400m on day two? Most DIY itineraries get the altitude sequence wrong because they prioritize flight convenience over acclimatization logic. | We sequence low-to-high: Chengdu (500m) → Dujiangyan (700m) → Jiuzhaigou base (2,000m) → park (2,500–3,100m) → Huanglong (3,200–3,600m). Gradual ascent, minimal altitude issues. |
The Visa Situation
Chengdu is one of China's 240-hour (10-day) visa-free transit ports. Citizens of 54 countries — including the US, UK, Australia, Canada, and most of Europe — can enter Sichuan without a visa, as long as they hold an onward ticket to a third country. This covers the full 8-day itinerary above with room to spare. For longer Sichuan trips (10–14 days), a standard tourist visa is straightforward through your local Chinese consulate.
Chengdu Is a Hub, Not a Dead End
Many travelers use Sichuan as one leg of a larger China trip. Chengdu connects directly to Xi'an (3.5 hrs by train, Terracotta Warriors), Chongqing (1.5 hrs, Yangtze cruise departure point), Kunming (6 hrs, gateway to Yunnan), and Lhasa (2.5 hrs by flight, Tibet). If you want to combine Sichuan with another destination, we design the handoff so you do not lose a day to logistics.
