China Travel Tips: Your Smooth First Journey

Practical advice for visas, payments, apps, food, and culture — so you can explore China with confidence.

Before You Arrive

  • Tourist L Visa required for most (we assist with invites).
  • Book hotels & high-speed trains in advance (peak seasons fill fast).
  • Bring universal adapter (Type A/C/I, 220V).
  • Download offline maps & translator.

Money & Payments

  • Carry some cash (RMB) for small vendors & markets.
  • Alipay / WeChat Pay now accept international cards — set up before trip.
  • Exchange at airport banks or ATMs (widely available).
Keep some cash for remote areas.

Internet & Apps

  • Google, WhatsApp, Instagram blocked — use a VPN (personal use fine).
  • Amap (Gaode) for navigation; Apple Maps also works.
  • Didi (English version) for rides, much easier than street taxis.
  • Offline Google Translate / iTranslate saves the day.

Food & Drink

  • Regional cuisine varies widely — be adventurous but cautious with spice.
  • Tap water NOT drinkable. Buy bottled water everywhere.
  • Street food is delicious — pick busy stalls for freshness.
  • Picture menus are common — point and smile!

Getting Around

  • High-speed trains are clean, punctual — book in advance.
  • Subways in major cities have English signs and are very cheap.
  • Use Didi for hassle-free rides; always have destination in Chinese.
  • Passport required for train/plane check-in.
Our private tours include door-to-door private transfers — zero stress.

Sightseeing & Etiquette

  • Popular sites (Forbidden City, Great Wall) — go early to avoid crowds.
  • Ask before photographing locals, especially in minority areas.
  • Keep voices moderate, queue politely, no littering.
  • Tibet & border areas require permits — we handle them.

Health & Safety

  • No COVID tests, vaccines, or quarantine required.
  • Bring basic meds: painkillers, stomach remedies, cold medicine.
  • Air quality may dip in winter — N95 mask optional.
  • China is very safe; watch belongings in crowded spots.

Communication Hacks

  • Use a translator app (offline mode).
  • Have hotel write addresses in Chinese for taxi.
  • Learn: Nǐ hǎo (hello), Xièxiè (thank you).
