How to Order: Step-by-Step

The entire process takes less than 5 minutes

1

Open 12306 App & Scan Your Ticket QR

Launch the official 12306 app (China Railway). Tap the QR code icon on your seat armrest or ticket — the app will auto-identify your train number, carriage, and seat. Already on the train? Go to "Food & Catering" (餐饮·特产).

2

Find "KFC" or Browse Station Restaurants

The app shows restaurants available at upcoming stations along your route. Look for the red KFC logo. You'll see menus at stations where your train will stop. Scroll to pick a station with enough stop time (typically 2-5 minutes).

3

Order & Pay (WeChat/Alipay)

Select your meal and pay via WeChat Pay or Alipay. Enter your name and seat number (carriage + seat, e.g. "Car 6, Seat 12A"). Order cutoff is typically 1-2 hours before the station stop — earlier is safer.

4

Wait — Food Arrives at Your Seat!

Station staff picks up your order from KFC and rushes it to the platform. A train attendant then delivers it directly to your seat. You'll receive an app notification when it's close. Hot, fresh, and surprisingly efficient.

Essential Tips for a Smooth KFC Train Experience

Things I wish someone had told me before my first train KFC

CRITICAL

Order 1-2 Hours Before the Station

Most stations have a cutoff time. For example, if your train stops at Nanjing South at 14:30, order by 12:30-13:00. The app won't let you order after the deadline.

PRO TIP

Check Station Stop Duration First

Stations with only 2-minute stops are risky. Aim for stations where the train pauses for 3-5 minutes. The longer the stop, the more reliably your food arrives.

SIM CARD

Order Before You Lose Signal

High-speed trains pass through tunnels and rural areas where signal drops. Order while you're still near a major city or station. The train Wi-Fi is also spotty — don't rely on it.

PAYMENT

Set Up WeChat Pay or Alipay Beforehand

You need either WeChat Pay or Alipay linked to a bank card. International cards work now, but set it up before your trip. Cash is not an option for train food delivery.

SEAT NUMBER

Double-Check Your Carriage & Seat

Carriage number + seat number (e.g., Car 08, Seat 05F). A wrong seat number means your KFC goes to someone else. The app auto-fills this from your ticket — verify it anyway.

ALTERNATIVES

Not Just KFC — McDonald's, Pizza Hut, & Local Food Too

The delivery system works for many chains and even local restaurants. Try a steaming bowl of Lanzhou noodles or dumplings delivered to your seat — often better than KFC.

Quick Pro Tip: If your train has a dining car (most G-series trains do), you can also buy hot meals, instant noodles, snacks, and drinks on board. The KFC delivery is for when you want that specific fried-chicken fix.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you might wonder about train KFC delivery

Is this really available on all trains?

No — it's only available on G-series (high-speed, 300km/h+), D-series (express, 200-250km/h), and C-series (intercity) trains. Regular K/T/Z trains don't support this service. Also, the stations along your route must participate — about 1,500 stations do.

Can I do this without a Chinese phone number or bank account?

You need at minimum WeChat Pay or Alipay linked to a payment method. As of 2025-2026, both platforms support international credit/debit cards including Visa, Mastercard, and Amex. Set this up before boarding. A Chinese phone number is not strictly required but makes registration smoother.

What if I miss my order because I'm not at my seat?

The attendant will try to find you. If you're in the bathroom or walking around, they'll usually leave it at your seat or ask nearby passengers. The app sends a notification when delivery is imminent. If somehow it goes undelivered, contact 12306 customer service — but this is extremely rare.

How much does delivery cost?

Delivery fee is typically ¥8 (about $1.10 USD) per order, sometimes ¥0-5 depending on the station. Food prices are comparable to in-store KFC — a standard chicken burger combo runs ¥25-40, a bucket ¥50-80. All in, you're looking at ¥35-60 for a full meal delivered to your seat.

Is the food hot when it arrives?

Surprisingly, yes — usually. KFC prepares the order fresh just before the train arrives. Staff rush it from the station KFC to the platform, and the train attendant brings it to you within minutes. On shorter routes and at well-organized hubs (Beijing South, Shanghai Hongqiao), it arrives piping hot. On less busy stations, it might be warm but still perfectly good.

Can I cancel or modify my order?

You can cancel before the order cutoff time (usually 1-2 hours before station arrival). After cutoff, orders are locked in. If your train ticket is changed or refunded, the food order is also automatically canceled and refunded — so no worries if your plans change last-minute.
