Jiuzhaigou Valley, meaning “Valley of Nine Fortified Villages,” is often described as a fairyland on Earth. With 108 terraced lakes in shades of turquoise, emerald, and sapphire, connected by spectacular waterfalls and surrounded by snow-capped peaks, it’s one of China’s most photographed destinations.
But here’s what most visitors don’t realize: the park spans 720 square kilometers with complex shuttle bus routes and walking trails. Without local knowledge, you could spend hours backtracking or miss the best viewpoints entirely.
Our private Jiuzhaigou tours are led by guides who know exactly when to visit each lake for the best light, which trails avoid the tour bus crowds, and how to maximize your time in this vast park.

How many days do I need for Jiuzhaigou?
Most travelers find 2-3 days ideal. One full day for Jiuzhaigou Valley (the park is large with 108 lakes), and optionally one day for nearby Huanglong Valley. If you want to combine with Chengdu (pandas) or other Sichuan destinations, plan 4-5 days total.
When is the best time to visit Jiuzhaigou?
Each season offers unique beauty. Autumn (October) is most popular with golden and red foliage reflecting in the lakes. Summer offers lush greenery and comfortable temperatures. Winter features snow-capped mountains and frozen waterfalls with fewer tourists. Spring brings blooming flowers and clear water.
Is Jiuzhaigou suitable for older travelers?
Yes, the park has an efficient shuttle bus system covering major attractions. Wooden boardwalks make walking easy. Our private tours can customize routes to minimize walking and allow rest time. However, the high altitude (2,000-3,100m) may affect some visitors.
How do I get to Jiuzhaigou?
Jiuzhaigou Huanglong Airport (JZH) has flights from Chengdu, Beijing, Shanghai, and other major cities. Alternatively, take a scenic 8-hour drive from Chengdu. We arrange airport transfers or private car transportation as part of your tour package.
Should I visit Huanglong too?
Yes, if you have time. Huanglong Valley, about 1.5 hours from Jiuzhaigou, features spectacular travertine pools in shades of turquoise and gold. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage site in its own right. Many travelers combine both in a 2-3 day trip.
What’s the difference between Jiuzhaigou and Zhangjiajie?
Both are stunning but offer different experiences. Jiuzhaigou features alpine lakes and waterfalls in a forested valley – peaceful and colorful. Zhangjiajie has dramatic sandstone pillars rising from mist – more otherworldly and adventurous. Many travelers visit both, and we can arrange combined tours.
