First Time at a Chinese Bathhouse? Here’s Everything You Need to Know
Inside Chinese Bathhouse Culture: What Foreign Travelers Should Know Before Visiting a Chinese Spa
For many first-time visitors, China feels familiar and unfamiliar at the same time. You recognize the cities, the food, the landmarks—but then you hear locals talking about spending an entire afternoon, evening, or even the whole night at a bathhouse.
For foreign travelers, Chinese bathhouse culture is often one of the most misunderstood yet surprisingly memorable local experiences. It is not just about bathing. It is about relaxation, social habits, and a uniquely Chinese way of slowing down.
This guide explains what Chinese bathhouses really are, how they work, and what foreign travelers should know before stepping inside.
What Is a Chinese Bathhouse?
A Chinese bathhouse—often called a bathhouse, bath center, or spa—is very different from a Western spa or sauna.
In China, a bathhouse is a multi-functional leisure space that combines:
Bathing and soaking
Saunas and steam rooms
Body scrubbing and massage
Dining
Resting and sleeping areas
Entertainment such as cinemas, game rooms, or reading lounges
For locals, visiting a bathhouse is not a luxury experience. It is a normal part of urban life, especially in northern China. People come alone, with friends, or even with family members, and may stay for several hours or an entire day.
A Brief History of Chinese Bathing Culture
Public bathing in China dates back thousands of years. Historical records from the Qin and Han dynasties already mention communal bathing spaces, particularly in cities.
In northern China, long winters and limited access to private bathrooms historically made public bathhouses essential. Over time, these places evolved from simple washing facilities into social spaces where people relaxed, talked, and rested.
Modern Chinese bathhouses, especially those built after the 1990s, reflect this evolution. They are larger, more comfortable, and designed to keep guests inside for as long as possible.
What Happens Inside a Chinese Bathhouse?
For foreign travelers, the experience is often smoother than expected—once you understand the process.
Step 1: Check-in and Wristband System
At the entrance, you receive a wristband or electronic tag. This acts as your locker key and your payment record. Most services inside are charged to this wristband and paid for when you leave.
Step 2: Gender-Separated Bathing Areas
Bathing areas are strictly separated by gender. Inside, you will find:
Showers
Hot pools
Cold pools
Saunas and steam rooms
Clothing is not worn in these areas. This can be surprising for first-time visitors, but for locals it is completely normal.
Step 3: Shower, Then Soak
Guests are expected to shower thoroughly before entering any pool. Cleanliness is taken seriously, and staff regularly monitor the bathing area.
Step 4: Optional Services
After bathing, you may choose additional services such as:
Body scrubbing (cuo zao)
Massage
Foot therapy
These services are optional, and there is no obligation to accept them.
Step 5: Public Lounge Areas
After changing into provided pajamas, guests move to common areas that may include:
Restaurants
Reclining chairs
Quiet sleeping rooms
Movie theaters or game zones
Nudity and Cultural Comfort
One of the biggest concerns foreign travelers have is nudity.
In Chinese bathhouses, nudity is functional, not personal. People do not stare, judge, or comment. Body shapes, scars, and age differences are treated with complete indifference.
For many visitors, the initial discomfort fades quickly once they realize how relaxed and respectful the atmosphere is.
Body Scrubbing (Cuo Zao): A Signature Experience
Body scrubbing is one of the most famous—and intimidating—parts of Chinese bathhouse culture.
A trained attendant uses exfoliating cloths to remove dead skin. The pressure is firm, sometimes surprisingly so, but many guests describe the result as feeling exceptionally clean and refreshed.
If you have sensitive skin, medical conditions, or simply feel unsure, you can:
Request lighter pressure
Decline the service entirely
Clear communication is always respected in reputable bathhouses.
More Than Bathing: Food, Rest, and Entertainment
What truly surprises many foreign travelers is what happens after bathing.
Most large bathhouses offer:
Full Chinese menus, sometimes including regional specialties
Quiet sleeping zones with blankets
Large-screen cinemas
Reading rooms and internet areas
It is common for locals to arrive after lunch and leave late at night—or even sleep there overnight.
Unwritten Rules Foreigners Should Know
Understanding a few simple rules helps you blend in easily:
Always shower before entering pools
Do not wear swimsuits in bathing areas
Mobile phones are usually not allowed inside wet zones
Loud conversations are discouraged
Tipping is not required
These are not strict laws, but following them shows cultural awareness and respect.
Is It Clean and Safe?
Reputable Chinese bathhouses maintain very high hygiene standards. Facilities are cleaned frequently, towels are sanitized, and staff monitor behavior.
For female travelers, women-only bathing areas are private and well-managed. Families and elderly guests are common, contributing to a calm and secure environment.
Regional Differences Across China
Bathhouse culture varies by region:
Beijing and Northeast China: Large, traditional, and highly social bathhouses
Shanghai: More modern, spa-like environments with a premium feel
Southern China: Smaller facilities, less central to daily life
Understanding these differences helps set expectations when traveling across regions.
Should Foreign Travelers Try a Chinese Bathhouse?
For travelers interested in authentic local experiences, a Chinese bathhouse can be surprisingly rewarding. It offers insight into daily life that no landmark or museum can provide.
That said, it may not suit everyone—especially those uncomfortable with communal nudity or extended leisure spaces. Choosing the right venue and timing makes a significant difference.
At HelloChinaTrip, we often help travelers decide whether a bathhouse visit fits their itinerary and comfort level, and recommend suitable locations based on city, age group, and travel style.
Final Thoughts
Chinese bathhouse culture is not about luxury or novelty. It is about rest, routine, and community. For many foreign visitors, it becomes an unexpected highlight—quiet, human, and deeply local.
Understanding it before you go transforms uncertainty into confidence, and curiosity into appreciation.

Signage improvement
Whenever I want to exit the metro into a mall, there is no signage to tell me which exit I should use. All exitspoint to above ground road name. Its just not one city, it’s every city in China the metro signage is like that. For a foreigner, I just want to get to the mall. Also there is no big map at the station indicating the exit goes to where. I hope metro stations all over China especially major cities can improve on the metro exit signage.
