Wonders of Ancient China - The Silk Road
This tour will leave you with great memories and allow you to experience the wonders and vast landscapes of ancient China in the far reaches of the legendary Silk Road. Cross the Gobi Desert like an ancient traveler, visit oases, listen to legends of the warring factions that prompted the construction of battlements, and create your own photo opportunities. In contrast, admire art artifacts, murals, carvings, and museums that show what life was like at the time.
Travel Itinerary
You will be greeted by your experienced guide at the train station or baggage claim area at the airport and transferred to your booked hotel in a comfortable air-conditioned vehicle. Along the way, your guide will explain the city background and main historical attractions. The rest of the day is at your own leisure.

After breakfast, you will depart for the Mogao Grottoes in a comfortable air-conditioned vehicle, where your professional guide will tell you about the legends behind the mysterious and vast Buddhist caves. Upon arrival, you will watch a documentary about the history of the grottoes, and then visit these manuscript storage caves that contain thousands of years of Buddhist art. Continue to Mingsha Mountain. Ride a camel up the mountain and listen to the beautiful melody of the sand dunes, which gave it its name. Hiking to the top of the mountain, you will enjoy a panoramic view of the layers of sand dunes that give you a sense of the wonder and mystery of the desert. At the oasis Crescent Lake at the foot of the mountain, your guide will unveil its mysteries and tell you about the efforts made to protect it.
Enjoy a comfortable ride back to your hotel.

After a refreshing breakfast, today’s exploration will take you away from the hustle and bustle of the city and into the majestic desolation of the legendary Gobi Desert. You’ll get up close to Yumen Pass, named after the many jade caravans that passed through it every day in ancient times. Afterwards, you’ll stop at the best-preserved section of the Han Great Wall, which is even more magnificent than the more famous Badaling and Mutianyu Great Walls. Due to limited available materials, this section was built with a mixture of sand, mud, rose willow, reeds and apocynum (a type of Indian hemp). You can get up close and learn more about the story of the Great Wall and take photos of the remains of this 2,200-year-old structure.
Another hour’s drive will take you to your next destination, exploring the Dunhuang Yadan National Geopark. Riding a cable car through the park, you’ll be fascinated by the natural erosion of rocks, which take on amazing shapes – such as lions, peacocks, pyramids and sphinxes. Continuous weather influences mean that the current shapes will also gradually change.
On the way back to your hotel, you can relax.

Your Dunhuang tour is coming to an end, your guide and driver will pick you up at the hotel and transfer you to the airport or train station to your next destination. Your Dunhuang tour ends today.

- The tour guide may adjust the itinerary due to closure of the museums each Monday.
- At the conclusion of the tour, a transfer from your hotel to Hongqiao or Pudong Airport in Shanghai is available upon request at a surcharge.
