The Jinggangshan Scenic Area in Ji'an City is located on the border of Hunan and Jiangxi provinces, situated within the central section of the Luoxiao Mountain Range—a northern offshoot of the Nanling Mountains. It lies approximately 130 kilometers from Jizhou District (the central urban area of Ji'an City) and 35 kilometers from the new urban area (Hongxing Subdistrict) of Jinggangshan City. In 1982, it was designated by the State Council as one of the first groups of National Key Scenic Areas. In 1991, it was named one of the "Top 40 Tourist Destinations in China," and has also been recognized as one of China’s "Top 100 Patriotism Education Demonstration Bases" and "Top 10 Excellent Social Education Bases."
In 2007, it was approved by the National Tourism Administration as one of the first 5A-level tourist attractions in China. Among its more than 30 revolutionary historical sites—including the Jinggangshan Revolutionary Martyrs Cemetery and the Jinggangshan Revolutionary Museum—10 have been designated as Major Historical and Cultural Sites Protected at the National Level. In 2015, the area was included on the tentative list for World Heritage status; it has also been honored as a "National Civilized Scenic Area" and a "National Demonstration Zone for All-for-One Tourism."
