Shen’s Garden, originally a private estate of the Shen clan, sits in downtown Shaoxing, Zhejiang. Dating back more than 800 years, it is the only preserved Song-style classical garden in Shaoxing and a provincial cultural heritage site, part of the national 5A Lu Xun’s Hometown Scenic Area.
The garden gained eternal fame from the sad romance between Southern Song poet Lu You and his first wife Tang Wan. Forced to separate, they met again by chance here in 1151. Overwhelmed with grief, Lu You wrote the ci poem *Phoenix Hairpin* on the garden wall, and Tang Wan later composed a matching poem in response. This touching story has been passed down through centuries.
The scenic zone is divided into the historic site area, East Garden and South Garden. The gourd-shaped pond and earthen hill are original relics from the Song Dynasty. Visitors may admire stone inscriptions of the poems, ancient wells and elegant waterside pavilions. The immersive night show *Night at Shen’s Garden* reenacts the ancient love tale, creating a poetic and sentimental atmosphere after dark.
