Dujiangyan is the world’s oldest—and only surviving—large-scale water conservancy project characterized by a dam-less water diversion system. Located on the main stem of the Minjiang River, west of Dujiangyan City in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, the project was commissioned around 256 BC by Li Bing—the governor of Shu Commandery for the State of Qin during the Warring States period—with the assistance of his son. For over two millennia, its ingenious, eco-friendly design—featuring a "4:6 water-diversion ratio" and an automatic sediment-clearing mechanism—has transformed the flood-prone plains of western Sichuan into a prosperous, famine-free "Land of Abundance" (Tianfu zhi Guo) where water resources are effectively managed for both irrigation and flood control. The project continues to deliver significant social benefits to this day and is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
