About the attraction

Danxia Mountain Scenic Area is a tourist destination located in Renhua County, Shaoguan City, Guangdong Province, covering an area of 36 square kilometers.

It is one of the six major scenic zones within the broader Danxia Mountain Scenic Area and one of the five major zones of the Danxia Mountain Global Geopark. The area comprises four distinct visitor zones: Zhanglao Peak, Yangyuan Mountain, Xianglong Lake, and the Jinjiang River. Zhanglao Peak is the oldest of these zones; it consists of a connected massif formed by Zhanglao Peak, Hailuo Peak, and Baozhu Peak, featuring three distinct tiers of sheer red cliffs—a hallmark of the "Danxia" (red-cliff) landform. Across the river from Zhanglao Peak lies the Yangyuan Mountain zone, named for the "Yangyuan Stone"—a unique rock formation renowned as the most extraordinary of its kind. Xianglong Lake, situated to the south of Zhanglao Peak, derives its name from the fact that its outline resembles a soaring dragon; the lake’s shape features a distinct head, horns, body, claws, and tail. The Jinjiang River bamboo-rafting route is located along the middle-lower section of the Jinjiang River, between the Danxia and Yaoshan power stations. Spanning 7 kilometers and taking approximately one hour to traverse, this section showcases Danxia landforms in their "mature" stage of development.

On December 29, 2011, the Danxia Mountain Scenic Area in Shaoguan was officially designated as a National 5A-level Tourist Attraction by the National Tourism Administration of the People's Republic of China, becoming the first site in Shaoguan to receive this prestigious classification.
