This tour really lives up to its name as the Essence of China, we got to experience everything from bustling modern metropolises to thousands of years of history and jaw-dropping natural scenery all in one 13-day trip. The Yangtze cruise leg was such a relaxing break after days of exploring cities and historical sites, it balanced the whole itinerary perfectly. Since it’s private, we could shift our start times each day to avoid the worst crowds, which was a huge advantage. Our guides in every city were fluent in English and shared so many fun local stories we never would have found in a guidebook.

We loved the diverse itinerary that covered everything from Shanghai’s glittering skyline to Guilin’s breathtaking karst mountains. The only downside is that we traveled during Chinese New Year, so almost every popular site was far more wonderful than we anticipated. Everything else from custom scheduling to our guide’s insight was fantastic. It was still an unforgettable trip, we’d just recommend picking a less busy travel window if you can.

I’ve dreamed of seeing the Terracotta Army and cruising the Yangtze for decades, and this tour checked every single box on my list.
