I loved how immersive this 9-day tour was, it didn’t feel rushed at all like some group tours I’ve been on. The mix of big cities, ancient towns, and dramatic natural landscapes made every day feel new and exciting. I especially enjoyed the quiet moments walking through Lijiang’s cobblestone streets at sunrise.

I’ve traveled all around Southeast Asia, but Yunnan’s unique blend of Tibetan, Naxi, and Bai cultures on this tour made it stand out as one of my favorite trips ever. Shangri-La’s snow-capped mountain views and Buddhist monasteries felt like stepping into another world, and Kunming’s flower markets were a colorful, chaotic delight that I could have wandered through for hours. Tiger Leaping Gorge is even more jaw-dropping in person than any photo can capture, and the tour gave us just enough time to hike and take in the view without being too strenuous for casual hikers. This trip perfectly balanced culture, nature, and relaxation, and I’d recommend it to anyone looking to explore southwest China.

The sights across Yunnan were incredible, but we ran into unexpectedly large crowds at Lijiang’s Old Town during the May holiday that cut into our exploration time.

I booked this tour through HelloChinaTrip after my consultant Will suggested it for my first trip to China, and I couldn’t be happier with his recommendation. Kunming’s vibrant street food scene was the perfect warm-up for the trip, and Dali’s Erhai Lake views were just as stunning as advertised. Hiking the lower section of Tiger Leaping Gorge was an unforgettable adventure, and the slow drive up to Shangri-La gave me plenty of time to adjust to the higher altitude. Every stop felt intentional, and I left Yunnan already planning my next trip back.

The scenery at Tiger Leaping Gorge took my breath away, I’ve never seen anything like the rushing Yangtze against the steep canyon walls. Our route through Kunming, Dali, and Lijiang was perfectly paced, with plenty of time to stop and soak in each location’s unique vibe.
