Walk on Air, 300 Meters Above a Canyon
430 meters of transparent glass spanning a chasm — the world's longest and highest glass-bottomed bridge. Your guide gets you here before the queues, when you can feel the full vertigo of walking on air above a 300-meter drop.

Opened in 2016, the Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon Glass Bridge broke 10 world records — including longest glass-bottomed bridge (430 meters), highest glass-bottomed bridge (300 meters above the canyon floor), and highest bungee jump platform (260 meters). Before opening, journalists hit the glass with sledgehammers to prove its strength — the outer layer cracked, but the bridge held. Six meters wide, engineered to hold 800 people, the bridge is a triumph of engineering and nerve. Below, the Grand Canyon stretches 300 meters down: a river snakes through karst cliffs, waterfalls thread down the walls, and the distant sound of rushing water rises through the glass.

What Makes This Special with a Private Guide

More than sightseeing — your guide reveals the stories, timing, and hidden corners that transform each place.

The Walk Across — 430 Meters of Adrenaline

The first step is the hardest — looking down through glass to the canyon floor 300 meters below. Trees the size of matchsticks, the river a silver thread, birds flying beneath your feet. Each panel is three layers of tempered glass (4.5 cm), capable of holding 500 kg per square meter. Your guide walks beside you, pointing out the engineering details, and takes your photograph at the center — arms outstretched, nothing but air beneath your feet.

The Bungee Jump — 260 Meters of Free Fall

The world's highest commercial bungee jump, 260 meters from the bridge deck to the canyon floor. The crew straps your ankles, counts "3-2-1," and you fall — approximately 4 seconds of free fall that jumpers describe as the most terrifying and exhilarating of their lives. Advance reservation essential. Even if you don't jump, watching others do it from the bridge is a spectacle.

The Canyon Trail — Waterfalls, Caves & a Boat Ride

After the bridge, descend into the Grand Canyon — a 3-hour trail along the river past limestone cliffs, hanging waterfalls, and the Bandit Cave (historically used by local outlaws). End with a boat ride through a narrow gorge — jade-green water between vertical limestone walls. The canyon is quiet, green, and almost empty in the morning.

Insider Tips

Private Guide Tips

How to experience this at its best — from someone who is there every day.

Go Early — the 7:30am Entry

"The bridge opens at 7:30am. By 9am, ticket lines can exceed 1 hour during peak season. By 10am, the bridge is crowded and the magic fades. Your guide arranges the 7:30am entry — you cross with perhaps 20 other people (capacity is 800), stop at the center for full vertigo, and descend into the canyon before crowds arrive."

Bring Your Camera — but Feel It First

"On your first walk across, do not look at your phone. Just look down, look around, feel the height. Then walk back (your ticket allows a return crossing) and take photographs. Best shot: lying flat on the glass at the center, your guide photographing from above."

Security Is Airport-Strict

"No large bags, no selfie sticks, no tripods, no food, no drinks (except water), no high heels (they scratch the glass). Lockers available at the entrance. Your guide advises: carry only phone and wallet in a small cross-body bag. Wear comfortable flat shoes."

Combine with the Canyon Walk

"Many visitors cross the bridge and leave — they miss the best part. The Grand Canyon trail below: 3 hours of downhill walking past waterfalls, cliffs, and the Bandit Cave, ending with a boat ride through a narrow gorge. The canyon is the hidden gem."

Is It Safe?

"Before opening, journalists hit the glass with sledgehammers — the outer layer cracked but the bridge held. Each panel is 4.5 cm of tempered laminated glass, tested to 500 kg/m². Inspected daily. It flexes up to 50 cm in strong winds — designed movement."

The Zip Line & Via Ferrata — Extra Adrenaline

"For visitors wanting more thrills beyond the bridge: a zip line crosses the canyon at high speed, and a via ferrata (iron path) climbs the canyon wall with metal rungs, cables, and bridges bolted into the cliff. Helmets, harnesses, and guides provided. Not essential, but excellent for active travelers — your guide can recommend and book in advance."

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Glass Bridge safe?
Yes. Each glass panel is three layers of tempered glass (4.5 cm total), tested to hold 500 kg per square meter. The bridge can hold 800 people simultaneously. It is inspected daily, and panels are replaced when any visible scratch appears. During pre-opening tests, journalists struck the glass with sledgehammers — it cracked but remained structurally sound.
How many people are allowed on the bridge?
Engineered capacity is 800 people at once, but daily visitors are capped at 8,000. Tickets must be booked in advance — same-day tickets often sell out in peak season. Your guide handles the booking.
Can children walk on the Glass Bridge?
Children of any age can cross, and many find it fun rather than frightening — they are often less afraid of heights than adults. Children under 1.2 meters must hold an adult's hand. The bridge has solid side railings at 1.2 meters height.
What happens if it rains?
The bridge remains open in light rain. The glass becomes more slippery, so walking is more cautious — but the canyon views are more dramatic with mist. In heavy rain or thunderstorms, the bridge may close temporarily. Your guide monitors conditions and can adjust your itinerary.
How long does the full experience take?
Bridge crossing: 15-25 minutes. Canyon trail: 2-3 hours (mostly downhill, well-paved). Boat ride: 15 minutes. Total: 3-4 hours. Some visitors do just the bridge (30 minutes) and leave — they miss the canyon, which many consider the best part.

"

"The first step onto the glass — looking down 300 meters to the canyon floor — is something I'll never forget. Our guide had us on the 7:30am entry. The bridge was almost empty. We lay flat on the glass at the center point, staring straight down. By 10am, the bridge was packed with hundreds of people. Early entry is everything."

"

"I was terrified — genuinely shaking at the entrance. Our guide talked me through it calmly, walked beside me, pointed out safety features, and within minutes I was laughing at myself at the center. The canyon walk afterward was unexpected — waterfalls, caves, a boat ride. The bridge gets attention, but the canyon trail is equally beautiful."

"My teenage son did the bungee jump — 260 meters. He says it was the most terrifying and amazing 4 seconds of his life. Our guide arranged the booking weeks in advance. Even if you don't jump, watching others do it adds to the experience. A world-record engineering achievement and a genuine thrill."

"The canyon walk stole the show for me — three hours past waterfalls threading down limestone cliffs, through a cave, ending with a boat ride on jade-green water. Our guide pointed out the Bandit Cave and told stories of 19th-century outlaws. The bridge is the headline, the canyon is the hidden gem."
