The development of the Yunhe Terraces began as early as the early Tang Dynasty and flourished during the Yuan and Ming dynasties, boasting a history of over 1,000 years. With an elevation range spanning from 200 meters to over 1,400 meters—a vertical rise of more than 1,200 meters—the site encompasses diverse geological landscapes, including high mountains, hills, and valleys. Characterized by its vast scale, striking visual impact, and distinct seasonal scenery, it stands as the largest terrace complex in East China and is renowned as "China’s Most Beautiful Terraces." The scenic area features a rich array of natural attractions, including terraced fields, seas of clouds, mountain villages, bamboo forests, streams, waterfalls, and rime (frost-covered vegetation). The defining features of the Yunhe Terraces are often summarized by the concept of "three thousands"—a thousand-year history, a thousand-meter elevation span, and a thousand layers of terraces—along with "three ten-thousands"—ten thousand *mu* (approx. 667 hectares) each of azaleas, seas of clouds, and bamboo forests.
On February 6, 2024, the Yunhe Terrace Scenic Area was designated as a National 5A-level Tourist Attraction by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of the People's Republic of China. It became the 21st site in Zhejiang Province—and the second in Lishui City—to receive this prestigious 5A-level status.
