Your 11-day Chinese adventure kicks off today! After arriving in Beijing, you'll be greeted and checked into your comfortable accommodation, with plenty of time to rest and adjust to your new time zone before exploring starts tomorrow.

Today we dive straight into Beijing's imperial heart. We'll start at sprawling Tiananmen Square, then step into the Forbidden City, the centuries-old walled palace complex that was once home to China's emperors, off-limits to ordinary people for hundreds of years. After exploring the palace grounds, we'll hike up to the overlook at Jingshan Park for sweeping panoramic views over the entire Forbidden City and central Beijing. We end the day wandering the winding, charming lanes of Nanluoguxiang, one of Beijing's best-preserved famous hutong (ancient alley) districts.

Today brings the iconic experience you've been waiting for: a visit to the Great Wall of China! After our wall adventure, we'll stop at a local jade carving factory to learn about this ancient traditional Chinese craft. On our drive back to the city, we'll make photo stops at two of Beijing's most famous modern landmarks: the Bird's Nest National Stadium and the Water Cube Aquatics Center.

We explore more of Xi'an's ancient treasures today before transferring to Guilin. We start with a stroll or cycle along Xi'an massive, perfectly preserved Ancient City Wall, one of the largest intact ancient city walls in the world. Next we visit the 1,300-year-old Giant Wild Goose Pagoda, a historic Buddhist landmark, and wander the scenic North Square at its base. We also stop at Hanyang Mausoleum, an important Han Dynasty archaeological site with well-preserved ancient artifacts, before wrapping up our time in Xi'an.

We also visit Reed Flute Cave, a spectacular illuminated limestone cave full of otherworldly rock formations before transferring to Shanghai.

As a history lover, I’ve wanted to see Silk Road heritage sites in China for decades, and this tour delivered way more than I hoped. Our guide in Xi'an was incredibly knowledgeable, pointing out little-known details about the Terracotta Army and the ancient starting point of the Silk Road that I never would have learned from a guidebook. The contrast between the modern energy of Shanghai, the imperial history of Beijing, the ancient roots of Xi'an, and the serene natural beauty of Guilin made every day feel fresh and exciting. I would absolutely recommend this tour to any traveler looking for a comprehensive, personalized experience of China.
The tour itinerary and our guide were absolutely incredible, but we visited during Chinese New Year which meant almost every major site was far more wonderful than we expected. This made moving through a few spots slower than planned, but it didn't ruin our amazing trip.
The Li River cruise in Guilin alone was worth the price of this entire tour.
