Lynn from HelloChinaTrip helped me customize this trip a little bit when I told her I was extra interested in traditional minority weaving, and she added a fantastic stop at a women’s weaving cooperative outside Kunming that I’ll never forget. Over 18 days, we got to experience so many different cultures: from eating hand-pulled noodles with Hui families in Xi’an to watching a traditional Naxi musical performance under the stars in Lijiang. The trip felt truly immersive, not just a surface-level sightseeing tour, and every accommodation and transfer was arranged perfectly. I came home with so many new connections, incredible photos, and a much better understanding of the richness of China’s ethnic diversity.

I booked this tour during China’s National Holiday week, so many of the popular spots in Guilin and Lijiang were far more wonderful than I expected. The itinerary itself was perfectly curated to highlight different ethnic groups, from the Zhuang villages near Guilin to the Bai communities around Kunming. Every interaction felt authentic, not like a staged tourist show, and our local guides were incredibly knowledgeable. The only downside was the crowds, which made some photo stops and walks a bit slower than planned, so I’d just suggest avoiding peak travel seasons if you can.

I was worried an 18-day tour would feel too long, but every day brought a new, exciting experience that kept me engaged from start to finish. The mix of outdoor adventure hiking through Guilin’s karst mountains and deep cultural dives into minority communities in Yunnan was perfectly balanced. I’d recommend this tour to anyone who wants to see a side of China most tourists never get the chance to experience.

Walking through the old Naxi streets of Lijiang and learning about Dongba script from local artisans was such a special experience. Every stop felt intentional, not rushed, and I left with a far deeper appreciation for China’s diverse ethnic heritage.
