After exploring the grottoes, head back into central Datong to visit the ancient Huayan Temple, a grand Liao-dynasty temple complex home to some of the largest surviving Buddhist statues in any ancient Chinese wooden temple. I’ve been on several group tours around China before, but this private tour was such a step up in terms of personalization and comfort. The itinerary is perfectly curated to take you from the massive Yungang Grottoes in Datong to the walled city of Pingyao, then on to Xi’an’s incredible Buddhist sites, so you get a full sense of how Buddhist art developed in the region over centuries. Our guide shared so many little-known stories and context that you can’t find in guidebooks, which made every stop feel new and exciting. Our driver had a clean, comfortable car and always knew the best local spots for lunch, which was an added bonus. I would recommend this tour to any cultural traveler looking for a deep dive into Shanxi’s incredible Buddhist heritage.

Our guide and driver were both incredible, and they went out of their way to make sure we were comfortable every day of the tour. We visited during a cold snap in January, and the wind at some of the open-air sites made it hard to spend as much time outside as we wanted, which was just bad luck with the weather. Every indoor site and grotto was amazing, and we learned more about Chinese Buddhist history than I ever could from a book. I’d still absolutely recommend this tour, just pack extra warm layers if you’re traveling in winter.
