This 7-day cultural journey departs from Xi’an and begins in misty mountainous Guizhou’s capital Guiyang, winding through the province’s most culturally rich regions: from Guiyang to ethnic culture hub Kaili, then to the ancient waterside town of Zhenyuan, and finally out to the remote tribal villages of Leishan. Once we arrive in Kaili, we visit the Kaili Museum to explore its fascinating exhibits covering the history, traditions, and art of Guizhou’s many unique ethnic groups. Next, we visit Shuangjing Village to watch masters demonstrate the delicate, intricate craft of traditional paper-cutting. We end the day exploring the sprawling Qinglong (Black Dragon) Cave, an ancient cliffside temple complex that blends Taoist and Buddhist traditions carved into the mountainside. After exploring Zhenyuan, we travel to the remote mountain region of Leishan, stopping first at Datang Village to learn about the unique customs and daily life of the Short Skirt Miao people. We then continue to nearby Langde Village, where you can observe Long Skirt Miao women and their famous elaborate hand-embroidered traditional skirts up close. 🌟 Day 6: Leishan to Guiyang Today we head out into the mountains for a gentle 2.5-hour hike through the rolling green terraced rice paddies of Baiyan Village, where local farmers will teach you about their traditional centuries-old farming techniques that have sustained the region for generations. After the hike, we visit the stunning Xiangshuiyan Waterfalls to take in the dramatic mountain scenery and cool mist. Next, we stop at the Gejia people’s village to watch artisans demonstrate the full traditional batik dyeing process from start to finish. We end our day of exploration with a visit to a historic traditional mill house, where you’ll learn how locals mill grain and craft handmade incense. I went on this tour solo as a female traveler and felt completely safe and welcomed the entire time. The indigenous villagers were so kind, letting me try their traditional handcrafts and share meals with their families. I learned more about Chinese ethnic minority culture in these 7 days than I did in a year of reading travel books. If you’re looking for a real, unfiltered look at rural Chinese culture, this is the tour for you.

Coming from Singapore, I’ve visited many parts of China but had never been to Guizhou before this tour. The mix of stunning mountain scenery and deep cultural immersion made this the best holiday my wife and I have taken in the last decade. We loved learning about the different weaving and silver craft traditions that each tribe preserves, and getting to buy handcrafted goods directly from the artisans. We’re already telling all our friends to book this tour when they plan their next trip to China.

The scenic loop drive through Guizhou’s mountains was absolutely breathtaking. Every stop gave us enough time to explore, interact with locals, and take in the incredible natural beauty. This is the perfect tour for anyone tired of crowded, touristy destinations.

I was worried the tour would be too touristy, but I was pleasantly surprised by how authentic everything felt. We didn’t go to any fake cultural villages, everything we saw was the real daily life of the mountain tribes. It’s a trip I’ll be thinking about for years.

The cultural experiences with local tribes were incredibly authentic and I loved getting to try homemade rice wine and traditional weaving. We visited during early wonderful season, so a few of our mountain hikes were more slippery and muddy than expected, which cut our time at one viewpoint short. I’d still absolutely recommend this tour to anyone looking for a deep dive into Guizhou’s unique culture, just book outside the wet season if you can.

Our consultant Sunny from HelloChinaTrip planned this tour perfectly for our small group of adventure travelers. She adjusted our itinerary slightly to add an extra night in a tribal village when we asked, and every arrangement went off without a hitch.
