Your cultural adventure kicks off today when you arrive in the historic northern city of Datong. Your private driver will meet you at your arrival point (airport, train station, or pre-booked city hotel) and help you get settled into your accommodation for the night, leaving you free to rest or explore the local neighborhood at your leisure before tomorrow’s full day of sightseeing.
Start your day with an included 🍽️ breakfast at your hotel, then head out with your private guide to explore Datong’s most iconic heritage sites. First, you’ll visit the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Yungang Grottoes, where thousands of intricately carved Buddhist statues dating back to the Northern Wei Dynasty line the cliff faces. After soaking in the ancient art, you’ll tour the sprawling Huayan Temple, a well-preserved Liao Dynasty Buddhist complex, before stopping at the massive, ornate Nine-Dragon Screen — one of the largest and best-preserved ancient imperial decorative walls in China. After your included 🍽️ breakfast, you’ll leave Datong and journey toward Mount Wutai, one of China’s four great sacred Buddhist mountains. Next, you’ll visit the Wooden Pagoda of Ying County, the oldest and tallest surviving all-wooden pagoda in China, held together entirely without metal nails. Wake up to fresh mountain air and enjoy your included 🍽️ breakfast, then spend the morning exploring Mount Wutai’s most sacred temples. You’ll tour Xiantong Temple, one of the oldest and largest temple complexes on the mountain, before visiting Pusading Temple, the head temple of Tibetan Buddhism on Mount Wutai, set atop a scenic hilltop. Your final stop is Tayuan Temple, home to the iconic white Great Shakyamuni Pagoda that serves as the symbol of the entire mountain. Next, you’ll sit down to an included 🍽️ traditional Shanxi lunch, where you can sample local specialties like knife-cut noodles and regional braised dishes. After lunch, you’ll travel toward Pingyao, stopping first at Qiao Family Courtyard — a massive, exquisitely decorated 19th-century merchant mansion that’s one of the best examples of northern Chinese courtyard architecture. Before arriving in Pingyao, you’ll also visit the quiet Shuanglin Monastery, home to over 2,000 well-preserved painted clay Buddhist statues from the Song and Ming dynasties. Today is dedicated to exploring the perfectly preserved ancient walled city of Pingyao, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that was once the financial capital of imperial China. After your included 🍽️ breakfast, you’ll head out for a leisurely walking tour along the 6km Pingyao City Wall, where you’ll get panoramic views over the city’s thousands of grey-tiled courtyard homes. Next, you’ll step inside the Rishengchang Former Bank, the first draft bank in Chinese history, to learn how 19th-century Shanxi merchants revolutionized global finance. After that, you’ll stroll down the bustling Ming and Qing Street, lined with traditional shops and local snack stalls, before wandering the quiet, winding ancient alleys that still look much as they did hundreds of years ago. You’ll return to your 🏨 Pingyao accommodation for the night.
Your 7-day cultural heritage adventure comes to a close today. This tour was the absolute highlight of our three-week trip through China. I was particularly impressed by how much care our guide put into explaining the history and context of each site, which made every stop feel much more meaningful than just checking landmarks off a bucket list. I would book this tour again in a heartbeat.

I've done multiple group tours in China before, but this private tour was such a better, more personal experience. We never felt rushed, our guide took us to small local family restaurants for lunch instead of crowded tourist traps, and we learned far more context than we would have ever gotten wandering on our own. Standing inside the ancient Yungang Grottoes and walking the intact city walls of Pingyao was unforgettable, and concluding the tour in Xi'an to see the Terracotta Army was the perfect final touch. I can't recommend this tour enough to anyone who wants to dive deep into Chinese cultural heritage.

Our driver was always punctual and our car was very comfortable for the longer drives between sites. The itinerary is perfectly paced, giving you enough time to explore each spot without feeling like you're rushing from one landmark to the next.

The cultural sites on this tour are absolutely breathtaking and our guide and driver were both professional, friendly, and extremely attentive. We visited during the May Golden Week holiday, so almost every major site was much more wonderful than we anticipated, which made it hard to fully linger and enjoy some spots. Even so, we got to see so many incredible ancient relics that I'd still recommend this tour to anyone interested in Chinese history. Next time I'll be sure to book outside of peak holiday season!
