This 7-day private family adventure starts in the glittering international hub of Shanghai, before traveling inland to explore the misty, iconic peaks of Huangshan (Yellow Mountain). After soaking in world-famous natural scenery and exploring charming nearby cultural villages, the journey winds down to serene Hangzhou, the heart of Chinese tea culture and home to the UNESCO-listed West Lake. Curated specifically for families, this route balances must-see iconic sights, hands-on local experiences, and flexible pacing to suit every member of your group.
🌟 Day 1: Shanghai
Today is your arrival day in dynamic Shanghai! After meeting your private guide at the airport or station, you’ll be transferred straight to your comfortable accommodation right by the iconic Bund. Settle in, take a casual riverside stroll if you’re feeling up to it, and get rested for your week of adventures ahead. 🏨 Stay: Sunrise On The Bund Hotels & Resorts Shanghai
🌟 Day 2: Shanghai
Kick off your first full day of sightseeing with a wander through the classic, lantern-strung Yuyuan Garden, a centuries-old traditional Chinese garden in the heart of old Shanghai. After exploring winding paths and ornate pavilions, you’ll head to the iconic Huxinting Teahouse on the garden’s central lake to sip a fragrant cup of traditional local tea. Next, ascend the towering Shanghai Tower for sweeping bird’s-eye views of the entire city, then walk along the Bund to admire the stunning collection of historic international architecture that lines the Huangpu River. End the day with a visit to the fascinating Shanghai Postal Museum to learn about the city’s rich communication history. 🍽️ Included Meal: Breakfast 🏨 Stay: Sunrise On The Bund Hotels & Resorts Shanghai
🌟 Day 3: Shanghai → Huangshan
After breakfast, you’ll travel from Shanghai to the Huangshan region, where you’ll dive straight into a fun hands-on cultural activity: crafting your own traditional herbal fragrance plaque, a sweet-scented handicraft with centuries of local history. In the evening, take a leisurely stroll along the cobblestone lanes of Tunxi Ancient Street, a preserved historic trading district lined with wooden shopfronts selling local snacks, handicrafts and one-of-a-kind souvenirs. 🍽️ Included Meal: Breakfast 🏨 Stay: Shanshui Boutique Hotel
🌟 Day 4: Huangshan
Today is all about exploring the otherworldly beauty of Huangshan (Yellow Mountain), one of China’s most famous scenic landmarks. After breakfast, you’ll ride the Yungu Cable Car up to the mountain’s core scenic area, then spend the day wandering well-marked trails to admire Huangshan’s most iconic natural wonders: gnarled, ancient pines growing out of sheer rock faces, weirdly shaped granite formations that have inspired Chinese poets and painters for millennia, and if you’re lucky, the breathtaking rolling “sea of clouds” that blankets the valleys below on misty days. 🍽️ Included Meals: Breakfast, Lunch 🏨 Stay: Xihai Hotel
🌟 Day 5: Huangshan → Bishan Village
Wake up early today to catch one of Huangshan’s most magical experiences: a golden sunrise spilling over the misty mountain peaks, turning the cloud sea pink and orange. After soaking in the view, you’ll descend the mountain via cable car, then head to the quiet nearby village of Bishan. Explore the beloved Bishan Bookstore, a popular cultural spot housed in a restored traditional village courtyard, then climb the ancient Yunmen Pagoda for panoramic views over the village and surrounding green hills. 🍽️ Included Meal: Breakfast 🏨 Stay: Shanshui Boutique Hotel
🌟 Day 6: Huangshan → Hangzhou
After breakfast, you’ll travel from the Huangshan region to Hangzhou, the scenic former capital of southern China and the birthplace of world-famous Longjing green tea. Start your Hangzhou exploration at the iconic West Lake, a UNESCO-listed scenic lake surrounded by rolling green hills and centuries-old historic sites. Walk along the tree-lined Su Causeway, which cuts right through the middle of the lake, then ascend the historic Leifeng Pagoda for sweeping views over the entire lake area. End the day with a visit to the beautifully preserved former residence of Hu Xueyan, a famous 19th-century Chinese merchant, to see how wealthy merchant families lived in imperial China. 🍽️ Included Meal: Breakfast 🏨 Stay: Hangzhou West Lake Zhongwei Xiangyi Hotel

This tour was perfect for multi-generational travel with my retired parents and my 7-year-old daughter. Our guide adjusted the daily pace perfectly for everyone, and we never felt pressured to stick to a rigid itinerary that didn’t work for our family.

Fully customizable and totally stress-free, this was the best family vacation we’ve ever taken in China.

As a family that hates being herded around with 40 other tourists, this private tour checked every single box for us. We got to extend our time in Shanghai’s old French Concession to browse independent vintage shops, cut our time at a overcrowded temple in Hangzhou, and add an extra stop for hand-pulled noodles that I’d been craving. Our guide was flexible, friendly, and knew all the best hidden spots to dodge main tourist crowds. We loved every minute of the trip and would absolutely book again for our next China visit.

We had a wonderful time overall, with excellent guide service the whole week. We visited during the May holiday, so popular scenic spots at Huangshan and Xi’an were much more wonderful than we anticipated, which cut a little into our sightseeing time.

We traveled with our two teen kids on this tour, and we couldn’t have asked for a better experience. Every stop was adjusted to fit our kids’ interest in ancient Chinese history, especially the Terracotta Army stop in Xi’an where our guide shared fun, engaging facts instead of dry lectures. We got to skip generic group meal stops and try hidden local street food we never would have found on our own. Having a private driver and guide the whole week made traveling with teens so much less stressful than we expected.

Ethan at HelloChinaTrip helped us customize this tour to add an extra traditional tea tasting day in Hangzhou that our whole family loved. Our private guide was incredibly knowledgeable about all the heritage sites across every city, and we never felt rushed like we would on a standard group tour.
