This 11-day tour exceeded all my expectations when I planned my first trip to northern China. I had only ever visited Beijing and Shanghai before, so getting to explore the more historic, less commercialized parts of Shanxi was such a special experience. Our driver was safe, courteous, and always had the car comfortable for us between stops, no matter the weather. As someone who loves food as much as history, I was thrilled that our guide took us to tiny local restaurants off the tourist track in every city. I’ve done multiple group tours in China before, but this private tour was such a step up in comfort and personalized experience. Our guide adapted the itinerary to our love of ancient architecture, spending extra time explaining the history of Pingyao’s courtyard homes and the temples on Mount Wutai. The private car meant we never had to wait for other groups or deal with crowded public transport between cities. This tour is a dream for anyone who wants to explore China’s less touristy but incredibly rich cultural side.

Our private guide in Datong was incredibly knowledgeable about the Yungang Grottoes, pointing out details I would have completely missed on my own. The pace was perfect—never too rushed, we had plenty of time to soak in the ancient atmosphere of Pingyao’s walled city and hike the quieter trails of Mount Wutai. I can’t recommend this tour enough for anyone who loves deep cultural travel away from overcrowded big city spots.

Our guide and driver were absolutely fantastic, full of great local recommendations and always flexible with our schedule. The only downside was that we visited during the May holiday, so popular spots like the Yungang Grottoes and Pingyao’s main street were far more wonderful than we anticipated. Even so, the trip was incredible and well worth the cost.
