I’ve been doing pottery as a hobby for five years back home, so I was really excited to learn traditional techniques from a local Jingdezhen master on this tour. The small class size meant my teacher could walk me through every step, from kneading the raw local clay to getting the tension right for clean wheel throwing. I’ve always struggled with consistent shaping, so his tip about adjusting the clay’s center completely changed how I approach throwing now. I ended up making a tall narrow vase to hold cherry blossoms every spring, and carved small rolling wave patterns into the side before glazing. There were no hidden fees at all, and lunch was a wonderful spread of local Jiangxi dishes I never would have found on my own. This is way more memorable than just buying mass-produced souvenirs from a tourist shop, I’m so happy I booked it.

I went on this tour with my teen daughter who loves pottery, and we both had the best time. As someone who’s studied ceramic history in college, it was so special to learn traditional techniques right here in Jingdezhen, a place that’s been making world-class porcelain for over two thousand years. I tried wheel throwing and ended up with a small bulbous vase that I carved peony leaves into around the rim, and my daughter painted tiny playful koi fish on her eating bowl. Our master adjusted my wobbly base without taking over the whole process, which I really appreciated—he wanted us to make our own original work, not a generic perfect factory piece. All materials were included, the lunch was delicious home-style local food, and our English guide was super knowledgeable about Jingdezhen’s centuries-old ceramic traditions. We can’t wait to display our finished pieces on our living room mantel back in Toronto.

HelloChinaTrip organized this experience seamlessly, and I couldn’t have asked for a better day during my trip through southern China. I made a small cereal bowl for my morning oatmeal back home, and painted a simple classic blue willow pattern around the edge that I’ve always admired. I was nervous about international shipping, but my bowl arrived safely at my home in London just a month after the tour, and the glazing came out shinier and prettier than I ever imagined. It’s such a fun conversation piece when guests come over to visit.

Small boutique class size meant I got all the one-on-one help I needed as a total beginner. I can’t recommend this experience enough for anyone visiting the Porcelain Capital.

I came on this tour with my two kids aged 10 and 12, and we all had such a wonderful day making our own ceramic pieces. The kids loved wheel throwing the most—my son made a charmingly lopsided coffee mug that he’s obsessed with, and my daughter painted cute little pandas on her blue and white snack bowl. The master and our English guide were so great with the kids, never rushing them and happily helping them fix any small mistakes they made. It’s such a special family memory, and we all love displaying our finished pieces in our kitchen back in Mexico City.

I made a mismatched set of two small tea cups for my partner, and painted delicate little plum blossom patterns on them with traditional cobalt blue pigment. The local master was so patient, even when I messed up my first wheel throw and had to start over from scratch. I got my finished pieces shipped to Dublin just three weeks later, and they turned out perfectly—no chips, and the firing softened the blue pattern exactly how I hoped.
