I've been to dozens of parks around the world and People's Park is unlike any of them. Our guide took us to the Matchmaking Corner and I couldn't stop laughing — then feeling moved — as she translated parents' hopes for their children. The Heming Tea House felt like stepping into 1923. Three hours disappeared in a bamboo chair. I finally understand why Chengdu is called China's most livable city.
The tea master at Heming performed the long-spout pouring ceremony and I got it all on video. Our guide then taught us the proper way to hold a gaiwan — I felt like I'd been doing it wrong my entire life. Later, we sat next to four elderly men playing mahjong and our guide translated their running commentary. They invited us to play a round. I lost badly but it was the highlight of my China trip.
I was skeptical about visiting a 'park' as a tourist attraction. How wrong I was. The water calligrapher painting poetry on stone, the elderly couples waltzing under pavilions, the ear-picking master with his tuning forks — every corner of People's Park held something surprising. Our guide was a Chengdu local who pointed out details I would have walked right past. This was the most memorable morning of our 2-week China tour.
As a tea enthusiast from Japan, I came with high expectations and they were exceeded. The Heming Tea House's gaiwan ceremony is different from Japanese tea ceremony — less rigid, more communal, equally profound. Our guide explained the history of Sichuan tea culture from the Tang Dynasty through today. She then took us to a hidden tea house in Kuanzhai Alley for a completely different atmosphere. Tea lovers, this is your pilgrimage.
